Mountain lion near Waterville? - Sounds like somebody left a gate open. "Waterville Township police are investigating a report of a huge animal seen rummaging through garbage cans yesterday along Noward Road. We are not aware of any free-ranging mountain lions in Ohio." That's good. Other possibilities: bobcat and coyote. Bobcats are almost non-existent in Ohio today. Coyote are everywhere.

Port Authority selection tomorrow - Does Lucas county need a career politician -- former Toledo mayor Carty Finkbeiner -- or one of the other candidates with experience in business and development? Dr. Shove, current director of UT’s geographic research center, former Marine and Norman, Okla., city councilman has written about successful regional economic development. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and his predecessor, Bob Martinez, have touted Dr. Shove’s knowledge of developing a technology-based economy.

DeWine still opposes drilling in ANWR - "U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine (R., Ohio) has reaffirmed his opposition to drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, much to the joy of Great Lakes-area environmentalists. Mr. DeWine was one of eight Republicans who in April crossed party lines and voted against drilling there." Once again, how does the U.S. become energy independent? Can't drill anywhere, don't want nuke plants, can't burn coal. Solar and wind power, I guess.

Mall at Fallen Timbers stalling - "The timetable for the Mall at Fallen Timbers project in Maumee pushed further into the future yesterday as the city said the developer wants more money for area improvements such as roads and sewers." Maybe the Toledo Design Center group discussed in the previous entry got to the developers about not making it cheap and ugly. Why do we need another mall?

Better building designs in Toledo? - "Toledo soon may see the last of "big-box" stores on acres of empty asphalt and cookie-cutter fast-food restaurant structures. Design Centers have positive impact in cities like Chattanooga, Pittsburgh, and Seattle." I'm all for this and wish the organization well, but it sounds like a tough task to change developers mindset.
