New version of Toledo Talk

Minneapolis bridge collapse - Seems especially eerie to me b/c a friend just told me the other day that she's still afraid to drive over the new I-280 bridge...not because she has a fear of heights, but because she's terrified of drowning.

Taxpayer money for cosmetic breast implants? - I'll be honest...I thought that the person who told me about this was either joking or misinformed.

Help me understand - Why is it such a travesty of justice that a person be requested to show a photo ID when voting? (This is in regards to a current uproar in Michigan, not Ohio.)

Think a water bar would fly in Toledo? - 80 types of bottled water that ranges anywhere from $30-$55 a bottle? At first I thought I was reading an article from the Onion or something, but nope...this is a real place.

2 year old boy sodomized by family dog - When I heard someone tell me about this, I thought that he must have misunderstood. Didn't think that it could possibly be a true story. But apparently it was. :(

Sylvania Fireworks - Much to my surprise, its already starting to get packed over here for the fireworks tonight...if by some chance you're planning to head out, you may want to take that into consideration.

Foreign bank account scam - now by US postal mail. I've been getting those e-mails for ages, but was quite surprised to get a letter in the mailbox this morning addressed to my husband and me. Someone with our last name passed away in 1999 leaving no heirs and an account with $15.5 million, blah, blah, blah. You guys know the drill.

Searching for parents of abandoned Findlay infant - I do hope that they are able to determine the identity of the child's mother. Even if the baby is placed in foster care and ultimately adopted, he deserves to at least know his medical history.

Blade to meet with unions in Cleveland this weekend - I'm surprised that I haven't seen this posted yet. Not information that has been released publicly yet, but there are enough posters on the board with ties to either the Blade or to the unions that I'd have figured someone would have leaked the info here already.

Deborah Barnett resigns from school board - I suppose I can understand why she became frustrated - how can you lead a group of adults who act like a bunch of spoiled children at times? Its unfortunate though, as it gives off the impression that the board is imploding. (Especially when you consider other recent events.)

The $1,470 an hour loophole - If you're 60 and need medical insurance for the rest of your life, get a job in a Michigan school. (even if only as an aide, cafeteria worker, etc.) Work 102 hours, then feel free to quit. You will have just earned free health care for the rest of your life.

Take Kids to Work Day being retired... - Since there was such a debate about this not too long ago, thought I'd pass along this article. Today is the last Take Your Sons and Daughters to work day.

Panel urges closing of Vamps, 3 other clubs - Saw this link and it reminded me of a previous thread - wasn't sure if the OP saw the recent article or not?

Empire Building - While sitting at the stoplight at Washington and Erie, I noticed a semi-boarded-up brick building that was labeled the "Empire Building." Anyone know the history of this place? I was just curious as to what the building was used for during its heydey.

Internet service provider recommendations? - We've had a cable modem through Buckeye for awhile now and have been happy with it. However, now that we have cancelled our cable TV service, the price went up on our monthly Internet service. (DirecTV has a monopoly on the MLB Extra Innings package and Mr. Mom2 can't live without it during the summer - otherwise we would have kept things as is)

What do you like about Toledo/the Toledo area? - I want to hear what everyone likes about this area. It can be anything from local businesses (well known, or "best kept secrets") to something geographically related to something about the people. My only stipulation is that this be a positive thread - we have negativity seep into nearly every thread (and often deservedly so), and I think there should be one spot where we can showcase what we love about it here. (We all must have at least one thing we like, right???) My apologies if this has been done before, but I don't recall seeing anything like it recently.

Parental Responsibility? - I must admit that one of my initial reactions to hearing that a 15 year old shot a police officer at 2 am was "what was he doing on the street at that time of night and where were his parents?"

Candlelight vigil at the Blade today, talks scheduled for next week - Heard from a pretty good source that there are talks between the union and the Blade scheduled for next week, and it wouldn't be surprising if they settled. There was a candlelight vigil at the Blade today - my understanding is that it was marking the fact that the unemployment benefits for the locked out workers are about to run out? I thought for sure I'd log on to Toledo Talk and see something referenced about it - anyone else have any info to confirm/deny this???

Anyone else having Buckeye Cable problems today? - On Super Bowl Sunday, of all days! We're having a group of people over to watch the game, and our channels are doing weird things...will come in for a few minutes, then switch to the "this channel is not available" screen. This might be the final thing that moves my husband over to the DirecTV camp...he's been debating about it since finding out that the baseball package will only be available via DirecTV anyhow. If Buckeye doesn't come through for us for the Super Bowl, I don't anticipate us having their service much longer...

Speaking of property taxes... - Another poster's comment about local property taxes in the "What do you think of when you hear Toledo..." thread got me thinking about our newly assessed taxes.

Johny D out at Tower 98 - This was on the Blade website today. I don't pay too much attention to ratings, but I was under the impression that when he moved to Tower 98 they actually started doing better in the ratings. (Though maybe that was just an initial boost and things had started to slump since then?)

painter recommendations? - Anyone have recommendations for a good, reasonably priced house painter? We haven't been making much progress in doing the painting ourselves at our new house, and after nearly 2 years of trying to wipe children's fingerprints from flat white contractor's paint the results aren't pretty! At a minimum, I'd like to hire someone to paint our living room - it has a high vaulted ceiling...much as my husband thinks we can try to do it ourselves, I have visions of him falling off someone's borrowed scaffolding. If the price turned out to be within our budget, I'd have them do a few other rooms too. Any recommendations you guys have would be greatly appreciated!
