Rumor confirmation please

I heard from someone that PizzaPapalis (original location: Greektown, Detroit) is planning to open a location downtown. Can anyone confirm this? It would be awesome to finally have some real Chicago style deep dish pizza in Toledo.

For those of you who haven't been there before, it's possibly the best pizza anywhere if you're into deep dish.

Sounds about right. I pass by 5/3rd field everyday and believe I see their sign on the old Brenda's Body Shop building.

And this from a Blade article

Mr. Jones said one of his projects will soon come to fruition and make a positive impact in Toledo.

One of the companies he brought to the LCIC is the Detroit-area restaurant chain PizzaPapalis, which is planning to open near Fifth Third Field.

According to Mr. Jones and LCIC employees, the agency coordinated PizzaPapalis’ effort to obtain grants from the city and county and helped with building negotiations.
County officials said the restaurant’s arrival will create a $1.7 million investment downtown and dozens of jobs.

I have not heard the rumor, but I have eaten the pizza. I still give a slight edge to the original Giordano's and Pizzeria Uno in Chicago, but maybe it's the atmosphere that influences my opinion.

I do know a Donato's Pizza opened in in Maumee (in the same strip as Chipotle), and that there's a Del Taco being built where the Krispy Kreme used to be in the Westland area.

I've never had either, but I've heard they're very good.

I work downtown and I am pretty sure I've seen the sign by the stadium coming soon!

ive seen the sign too. as much as im THRILLED to see new business in downtown.. i think its a real shame that they are opening a block away from "homeslice." hopefully the competition will be healthy and not put them out of business.. ans i think homeslice's thin crust pizza is awesome (and it's localy owned!)

Home Slice is awesome. I love Pizza Papalis too! They have two very different products. Home Slice has thin "New York style" slices, ready to go and pizza's made quickly when ordered. Pizza Papalis pizza has very thick "Chicago style" crust and each pizza takes an hour to bake.

I think there is a market for both types in Toledo. I just hope people come downtown to support these restaurants.

Aaaack. I love Homeslice but I wish people would stop referring to it as "new york-style". As a former NYCer I have to say that in no way would I consider it NY-style. It's way too thin. If it was brick-oven baked you might liken it to Lombardi's but that is STRETCHING it.

We tried Donatos tonight and it was yummy. I liked that we could get a couple individual pizzas so we could each get our favorite toppings. It is worth a try if you are in the area.

Small world. My friend and I also had Donatos last night. Honestly, we weren't impressed. There's much better pizza around town. Inky's and Jet's come to mind.
