This woman lost 160lbs. on a raw diet. I think there's more than anecdotal evidence that it works and from an anthropological perspective it makes sense. Much of the food/foodstuffs that is now commonplace wasn't around 50/100/200 years ago and no other part of the food chain cooks their what they eat. Nevertheless, best wishes in whatever route you take. We probably need to evolve past the bad habit forming creature routine.
Hey Latina,
I've likewise been overweight my whole life. Now that I'm nearing 50, my knees were starting to fail. I never considered the bariatric procedure because it would affect my existence too much. My doctor put me on metformin and byetta, a type-2 diabetes medicine. Byetta is a shot taken twice a day that keeps the food you eat in your belly longer, so you're simply not hungry. Without even making a conscious effort to cut back, I lost over 60 pounds in the last 14 months.
I'd suggest that you try this before resorting to the weight-loss operation.
David Brownstein has some interesting thoughts on thyroid. You can google his site or amazon.
Thank you for the info Jim, but some of the medications are not covered by my insurance. And the diet plans thru Mercy with the meals are not covered nor affordable either.
I do congratulate you on your extraordinary weightloss.I watched Biggest Loser the other night, I am amazed how much they drop quickly. But wonder how healthy is it and does it stay off after they stop working out.

ToledoLatina - why would you assume that they stop working out?
The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to make long term lifestyle changes. (Even bariatric surgery isn't a guarantee that a person will keep the weight off.)
Hopefully the people on the Biggest Loser received enough counseling/education to realize that they have to keep up a fitness program even once the "diet" is done!
But yes, I'd presume that they gain back the weight if they stop working out entirely and/or went back to old eating habits.
ToledoLatina, The byetta is expensive at $200 or so per month. My insurance covered it for me, as I was at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Maybe your situation is similar. Please investigate it.
Bariatric surgery is likewise expensive, but that's not what deterred me. The thing I disliked about that option is that one's life is forever changed. I like a nice thick steak every now and then, and didn't want to give it up.
I do business with a fellow who lost 120 of his 400 pounds within a year of having the surgery. His weight is now increasing because he's starting to eat more than the recommended volumes of food and in doing so he is expanding his surgically reduced stomach. He rightly fears that this could cause big problems for him.
Mom2 is right, lifestyle changes are necessary to lose weight. Both bariatric and byetta invoke new eating habits, but it's my experience that byetta allows significant flexibility. I had breakfast this morning after taking my dose. It's now 2:30 and I'm not hungry at all - didn't even think about lunch even though I made lunch for my son. It's certainly because some of my breakfast is still in my stomach. 7 hours after eating, I'm still sated.
Here's a link of other's experience with it. http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/03/02/business/drug.php
Thanks for your kind words of support for my experiences. Best of luck to you in your battle.
I am overweight and have tried everything. I am having surgery to remove my thyroid because of cancer. I am hoping this will help me with some weight loss otherwise I am going to have the weight loss surgery. I would do anything to drop the weight that quickly. My sister had the surgery and while she has excess skin, her life has greatly improved. And she feels younger.
