"Think Regionally, Not Provincially,

about economic issues"

Please read Tom Walton's Op-Ed piece in the Blade today, and post your comments. In my opinion, you must live regionally as well as think regionally. As long as we live in NW Ohio and SE Michigan, regionalism will not occur. We must begin living in Lake Erie West Communities! It is our global address and identity.

So regional is the new buzzword.

Most people are content with Ayn Rand's Virtue of Selfishness or the spiritual conceit of modern religion.

The area would be better served by organic banking and financial institutions not part of the centralized banking and commodity markets. A local currency and locally controlled interest rates would be a start.

Or we can just build an arena for sports franchises with high failure rates... just don't talk about cost overruns.

I think some "leaders" envision the Toledo area as the next Gary/Youngstown/Flint/Detroit.

In a global environment, branding a region is no longer an option; it's a matter of survival!

So said Edward Burghard, Executive Director of the Ohio Business Development Coalition, at the State of the Region Conference on 1/30/08.

Dial up Center for Regional Development on Google; scroll down to State of the Region; and click on Newsletter, for conference summary.

We no longer have the luxury of pointing our fingers at the public sector, and lamenting the poor job they are doing. IT'S NOT THEIR JOB! If we are to live in a region, we must believe in what we are doing! Do we live in NW Ohio and SE Michigan, or do we live in Lake Erie West Communities? It's up to the people who live there!
