"I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live."

Quite the diplomat.

John McCain's racist remark very troubling

Thursday, March 2, 2000

By KATIE HONG
SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER

On his campaign bus recently, Sen. John McCain told reporters, "I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live." Although McCain said he was referring only to his prison guards, there are many reasons why his use of the word "gook" is offensive and alarming.

It is offensive because by using a racial epithet that has historically been used to demean all Asians to describe his captors, McCain failed to make a distinction between his torturers and an entire racial group.

It is alarming because a major candidate for president publicly used a racial epithet, refused to apologize for doing so and remains a legitimate contender.

Contrary to McCain's attempt to narrowly define "gook" to mean only his "sadistic" captors, this term has historically been used to describe all Asians. McCain said that "gook" was the most "polite" term he could find to describe his captors, but because it is simply a pejorative term for Asians, he insulted his captors simply by calling them "Asians" -- a clearly disturbing message. To the Asian American community, the term is akin to the racist word "nigger." A friend of mine, a white male Vietnam veteran, pointed out that veterans, especially Vietnam veterans, know how spiteful the term "gook" is. It has everything to do with labeling someone as "other," the enemy and yellow. McCain sent the message that all Asians are foreigners and remain forever the "other" and the enemy.

The perception of Asians as "foreigners" or "the other" isn't new. This sentiment is what led to passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Japanese American internment during World War II. The internment of Japanese Americans is now recognized as one of the worst civil rights violations in our country's history and a powerful lesson in what can happen when race alone is used as a test for loyalty or who is defined as an American.

We've made tremendous progress as a nation in overcoming racism. That is why it is so disturbing that a major candidate for the U.S. president can perpetuate the stereotype of Asians as permanent foreigners, hurtling us backward to a time and a place where such racial epithets were an acceptable part of mainstream discourse.

What makes this incident even more disturbing is how neither the media nor the other presidential candidates have highlighted that his use of a racist term is unacceptable.

Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing minority populations in the United States. And the media's choice to ignore or excuse McCain's behavior is a painful reminder that Asians remain outsiders on the back steps of national American politics.

McCain's main campaign message is inclusion. What his actions have told me, however, is that his inclusion does not include people who look like me.

I love this country just as much as McCain does, and I am committed to serving my community and my country. That is the reason I have entered a career in public service and why I am committed to making America a great country where equal opportunity and justice for everyone is a reality and not just a vision.

This is also why I am so hurt by McCain's comment: He has reminded me that despite my commitment to serving my country, there are still some people in this country who would first perceive me as the enemy.

An amazingly dumb comment by McCain, but my initial thought after reading the quote was that McCain is commenting on his captors.
Doesn't excuse such an inarticulate rant. I just don't think Katie Hong could make a sweeping argument that John McCain perceives her (or Asians) as the enemy.

According to press reports McCain has scars, nearly died and can't raise either arm high enough to comb his hair, all as a result of his treatment as a POW. This liberal democrat greatly admires McCain for his courage and his forthrightness. He has earned the right to call em' as he sees em'. I sure wouldn't be singing Kumbia if I were in his place.

Mik-cain is probably mad that Vietnam wasn't included in the axis of evil, something he will "rectumfy" once he is elected. LOL
If he's still fighting the Vietnam war, how soon will he pull out of our current sexy oily love affair with Iraqi?

I don't want to meet the man who can completely forgive those who tortured him. What fools you are to believe that every politician is as perfect as he/she is portrayed by the media. Let the person who has no skeletons, no scandals, no embarrassing actions of their past be the first to criticize. (yes, I know it's loosely based on a quote from the bible). I don't care if he wears women's underwear as long as he does what is best for Americans and the United States. That goes for any politician(within reason). I don't care that Bill Clinton played cigar games in the oval office, just do what's best for this country.
headed off in a tangent now- These politicians are so "trained" to tell us what we want to hear and never stick to what they promise. I'd rather see them for the "real" people they are and know that going in, instead of hearing lies and watching another 4 years go down the drain.

Can't blame him even a little bit.

Maybe we should string prime3end up with his arms bound so tightly behind him that his elbows touch. Then hang him like that for a few days while we beat him.

Then see if he is forgiving.

Mccain has made a lof of amazingly dumb comments... but seems to be getting away with them.

http://www.concernedjournalists.org/love-and-hate-campaign-trail

This year, reporters like John McCain about as much as they disliked Gore. It’s easy to see why. McCain is accessible to the press. He likes to schmooze with reporters, and in the process he pokes fun at himself. He comes across as less pre-fabricated than most candidates, a regular person not molded by his campaign consultants. Ergo: a straight shooter.

But the record does not show that McCain shoots any straighter than the rest of them. His recent charge that Romney had proposed an Iraq withdrawal date was obviously bogus. His conversion from skepticism about the fiscal prudence of big tax cuts to his current conviction that cutting taxes will actually enhance government revenue (most dubious) and that “every time in history we have raised taxes it has cut revenues" (totally false) seems artful if not insincere. His explanations about his recent change of heart on immigration policy have been murky.

But reporters like him, so he gets minimal criticism. He got almost none for laughing and not protesting when a woman at one of his events referred to Hillary Clinton as “the bitch.” At a Republican gathering in 1998, McCain told a truly tasteless, mean-spirited joke: “Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno.” (Tasteless and, for what it’s worth, inaccurate; Chelsea Clinton has become a rather attractive young woman.)

As Maureen Dowd wrote, McCain “is so revered by the press that his disgusting jape was largely nudged under the rug.” The Associated Press reported it, but when other big news organizations mentioned the incident, they did not quote the joke itself.

One need not be an over-sensitive Democrat to conclude that had Hillary Clinton made similarly objectionable crack about any Republican’s child, it would have been Topic One on talk radio and TV chat shows such as “Hardball,” whose host, Chris Mathews, has openly proclaimed his contempt for Clinton. There would have been such a furor that the big newspapers as well as the broadcast and cable networks would have had to cover the story. But that’s because reporters don’t like her, and they do like McCain.

I don't blame McCain for his comment about gooks. I hope he never forgets about the way he was treated by the gooks.

I'll tell you one thing. If McCain is president and has to send US troops anywhere to fight, at least he'll understand what those troops are getting into and what they risk by being captured. Hitlery, on the other hand, will never serve. What's Obama's military history, anyway?

Nope. I'd vote for McCain on his experience and his plain talk about the enemy.

McCain's running mainly on Bush's agenda. It'll be easier to see in the general election.

How is he running on Bush's agenda, Chris?

Throughout his life he has had a temper problem and might not have been the brightest bulb, graduating 894th out of 899, the bottom 1st percentile from the Naval Academy.

The only reason he was kept alive in Vietnam was the status of his father, CiC of the Pacific Command.

He wrecked more than a few planes and went on 22 bombing missions in Vietnam. The Vietnamese offered to release him early.

Although he might like to think he was a scout delivering cookies, he was bombing civilian and military "gooks" to be an admiral like his father.

Speechless? Did you try taking the muzzle off?

I'm right handed and I don't speak 18th century French dialectical politics neither do my grandparents. Get with the times:)

"Get with the times"

Does that mean I need to become a "progressive" and take cheap shots at someone who served in an ugly war 40 yrs ago?

I bet your grandparents have more class than that. ;)

Actually, if you caught the 60 minutes preview for Sunday, they have a scoop on McCain. Apparently he was killed during the war and the government has placed his skin over a "terminator" type metal frame all controlled by a small alien from area 51. It was late and I was flicking through the stations when I saw the preview so I'm not really sure of all the details.

Citing facts (albeit possibly skewed in a critical light) is a cheap shot? Sorry to cramp your religion but I think the general consensus is that this is not the case.

I'm concerned about all the candidates characters and motivation. I think McCain is lacking the former and has dubious reasons for the latter. Does that make me a pinko? Or a concerned citizen?

Plus tommys got the real inside scoop.

posted by charlatan on Feb 08, 2008 at 07:51:23 pm     #

Motivation and character issues aside, he's still earned the right to call 'em gooks. Now would I vote for him based on that alone? No.

Charlatan, I don't know your age, but I can picture you spitting on returning Vietnam vets.

posted by Postal on Feb 09, 2008 at 11:04:26 pm     #

You really think I would disrespect anyone that way? What does age matter anyway? Ageist or something?

So now, you're demonizing me based on my citation of McCain's background and recent history?

I simply have doubts that he's right for the job.

If I've hurt your feelings I'd like to apologize. In a perfect world this discussion would never exist.

posted by charlatan on Feb 10, 2008 at 03:11:53 am     #

Ageist? No, just didn't know if you were actually around and/ or old enough to spit a loogie at that time.

So now I'm demonizing you? You say McCain bombed civilians for promotion to admiral, but, yet, I'm the one with unseemly comments.

Have your way with me. This thread has run its course and I'm done.

I was just repeating his biography. About 80% of Vietnamese deaths were civilian. Read his bio and decide for yourself. He's an interesting character.

I don't blame him for saying "gooks" My parents always said "Japs" Sometimes I say M------s I know it's not ALL OF "THEM" but for G-D's sake, if we accept EVERYTHING then WHAT do we stand for anyway, I ask you leftists? Ive always voted Dem. my entire life--now Im undecided and will probably vote Rep. Why? Its because I believe foreign affairs are the MOST important issue right now. Energy independence and ending the idiotic sauduction of America has GOT to end! People who don't want to assimilate, who want to go on welfare and keep their own language in public funded schools that WE pay for them, while despising us and conspiring daily to not follow our rules such as taxes, legal filings, federal holidays, work breaks, you name it--all because WE are SCARED of the biggest BULLIES the world has ever known--well whichever man can stand up to the BS and threat from the likes of that little hitler in iran--that is who i will vote for. Obama better start talking smart or I will vote REp for first time!
