Internet options in Toledo area

This will probably sound like a very stupid question. But, I can either ask the question and sound silly for a moment, or not ask the question and stay in the dark. :)

We don't have a home phone. Currently, we have cable internet through Buckeye, but it seems too expensive (IMO).

Are there any internet options aside from Buckeye for someone who doesn't have a landline in their home? (Our home is wired for phone service, of course...we just don't have phone service connected.) We live in Sylvania.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Depending in where you live in Sylvania, you may have Verizon DSL, or in the future their FIOS service (fiber to the house), but DSL around here seems can be flaky if you have old lines, and the last I read, Verizon is setting subscriber's houses on fire with the FIOS installs. Other option I can think of off the top of my head is a mobile broadband card, which would work, if you just have a laptop, but cost/speed wise, it would put you well above cable or DSL. Another thought.. have you checked with Buckeye about downgradeing your level of modem service? Depending on what level you have now, that might be an option also.

Thanks for the info.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Verizon require you to have a landline into your home? When I looked at their website, it talks about how the DSL uses your existing phone connection. (Also, the only reason my in-laws have a landline into their home phone is because its required for whatever DSL provider they use.)

I know from looking online that there are some DSL providers who don't require you to actually have a home phone line, but I can't seem to find any around this area??? (Unless I'm just not looking in the right places?)

The problem with Buckeye is that we don't have cable television service, so they add a $10 fee onto any of their internet packages. :( Of course, if we'd have to add the expense of a home phone line to get DSL service, maybe we're stuck with Buckeye.

DSL will typically run a phone line to your house if you don't have one already. You do not have to have telephone service which them though.

Either way, Buckeye was always higher priced and pretty pathetic when you compare them to the largest cable companies. We have Cox Communications here and they are amazing. Download speeds keep increasing and bill doesn't. I'm paying about $5-10 less than I did with Buckeye (when I lived there a few years ago), and my download speeds are around 10-13Mbps. Upload around 1 to 1.5.

So if you go that route, I have TOAST.NET , like their DSL,and only pay $19.95 a month. Don't know if it's available in all parts of town, though. They have a great support staff.

Not having TV does make the cable internet a little pricey.

As far as DSL goes, they use the phone line, but it may not be required for DSL service.

Having worked with both the Larger ISPs, and Buckeye, I find that Buckeye tends to be better on the subscriber and performance side then most of the larger ISPs, with COX being one of the exceptions. From what I've heard and read about COX, they pretty much blow anyone out of the water as far as performance and service..So I'll give you that :)

These work wonders for sending and receiving wireless. I'm getting 1.2 miles just half-assing it.

There's a guy in monroe selling pvc/all weather ones cheap or you can make one yourself. Google "pringles cantenna"

My first ISP was Toast.net, back in 1998. Went to Buckeye when high speed came out, then switched to SBC, now ATT DSL. Buckeye was too pricy. I've had ATT since 2003. Less than $20/mo. for 1.5m. I called Toast, and I do need phone service, not just the line to have DSL. I hate paying for home phone service just to have internet access.
