Here We Go Again - AGAIN!

Maumee police looking into allegations of racial profiling

Well, here we go AGAIN!

Damn white police officers picking on black...er...African American folks yet again! At least, unlike Lima, no one was killed!

Seems that in our neighboring city of Maumee, the lady pulled an illegal turn (which she admitted to) and Officer Friendly pulled her over. Upon running the driver history, Officer Friendly discovers she's driving with a suspended license! When told that procedure states her car will have to be impounded, she becomes irate (as would anyone), and asks Officer Friendly what she's supposed to do with her kids (an 18 year old and 2-11 year olds).

Even though the driver knew she was driving illegally (without a valid license), with other people in the vehicle (and her responsibility), it should now become the responsibility - the duty - of the Maumee Police to hire a personal limo to deliver her beloved children to their home or other destination of the drivers choice!

The white Officer had the nerve to pull this poor women over for the sole reason of racial profiling! DAMN! had a white person made that same illegal turn in front of Officer Friendly, they would have no doubt been let go - ignored. Maybe Officer Friendly would have at first pulled a white over, then, after noticing the driver was white, would have said to himself (or herself) "Oh shit! The driver is white! What the hell am I doing?"

Had Officer Friendly been bold enough to run whitey's license and discovered they were driving without a valid license, Officer Friendly would have done 1 of 2 things: (1) Not cite the driver and not tow the vehicle because they were white or (2) cite the driver, have the vehicle towed, and ordered up and paid for a cab for the driver's unfortunate family and friends to the destination of their choice - even though those in the vehicle were the responsibility of the driver!

It's all about the black/white thing! When will the police departments learn that no matter what that black...err African American has done - allegedly done - that they are doing nothing but racial profiling and it must stop!

I urge all police departments nation-wide to only use Officers of the same color, same sex and same age group to effect arrests of the citizenry! There should be no arrests of Mexicans by white or black Officers; no arrests of Italian woman by Mexican male Officers, and in short, the Police must stop enforcing laws against those 'people of color'.

ummm....I'm white and I too have been "pulled over" because I made an illegal U-turn.

But my license was not suspended and I was cited and sent on my way.

It has to be the illegal driving with a suspended license that created this debacle.

No, it was the fucking ILLEGAL U-TURN that caught this officer's eye that created this mess this law-breaker found herself in. It's too simple of a reason to think the officer has to negotiate traffic to get up behind this lawbreaker to pull her over.

Lee was then taken to the police station while her family members waited at a Long John Silver's for a ride. The police report shows Lee admitted to the illegal turn and describes her as "angry and loud."

Lee, however, denies that and says she didn't like the officer's tone. She is questioning why she was pulled over in the first place.

Ini every state I've been in, a moving violation warrants being pulled over and cited. If you're found to be on the roads illegally, which happened in this case via a SUSPENDED LICENSE, then this person needs to be arrested and the car license plates, which are the property of the state of issuance, removed from her possession. And without plates, the car is on the road illegally and cannot be moved under it's own power.

And since when is the police responsible for transportation when an 18 year old adult is amongst those put out by the suspended licensed driver? Was Taco Bell that expensive that a cab couldn't be utilized? The lady should be grateful the officer didn't bring Child Services into her life.

Bitch got caught breaking the law and thinks pulling the race card is going to save her ass? Try paying your bills and you won't have these issues.

Get over your racial selves and participate in abiding by the law. It's too fucking simple that an ethnical culture has something to hold over another ethnical culture's head when they're busted red-handed.

Fucking sense of entitlement.

Wonder why her license was suspended in the first place...

Why did the local news even bother with this story ?

Assuming the Cop car had a camera, I wounder what it caught. That should tell you a good idea of who was wrong and right.

What is troublesome about this incident is that false accusations of racial profiling diminish the credibility of people who ACCURATELY state that they were unfairly targeted by law enforcement officials solely because of their race -- which certainly can and does happen.

So, congratulations Unnamed Black Lady Who Made an Illegal Turn While Driving on a Suspended License. You just made a mockery of actual racism. Good job. (Insert slow clap here.)

But wait! There's more!

On 14 January, she gets stopped by Deputy Matthews for going 48 in a 35 zone, and also gets hit with 'improper display of plates'!

Did I mention she had no insurance at that time? (Could THIS be the reason she got that license yanked!)

(Well said, B in F! Damn well said!)

(And WA - the news 'reported' this story because it'll get folks worked up - it gets viewers! That's ALL the stations want - viewers - it brings in the money! The time has long gone for 'Responsible Reporting'!)

Racism sells-period! Look at headlines we see all the time: "Subtle Racism-Worse Than Regular Racism", or "Racism in Toledo Worse Than Ever",or "Cops Stop Driver w/no License-Profiling Alleged!" It just never stops.

CharlieA-Z, was there really a recent story alleging that racism in Toledo is "worse than ever"? I'm not saying it is or it isn't, but if there is an actual story I'd very much like to read it.

A quick search at both the Toledo Blade and Google News didn't yield anything like that. Perhaps it was a local TV news report?

Thanks in advance!

Jmleong-you just proved what I was saying-you can't wait to find out more! If that headline ran on television this afternoon-90% of Toledo would watch the eleven o'clock to see it! Racisim sells at least as good as a good sex scandal. That is why the news media fans the flames all the time.

You misunderstand my interest.

Your point may or may not be a correct one, i.e. that "racism sells," however my question was more along the lines of finding out the validity of the headlines you quoted.

I sort of feel that inflammatory and untrue statements about racism -- such as the accusations of the woman in the story that was the subject of this thread, or making up news stories that never existed -- are one in the same in that they are a detriment to honest discussions about race and they undermine efforts to understand and eliminate actual racism.

And I sort of doubt that 90 percent of Toledoans would foam at the mouth to hear a story about a study of racism in our city. Persons of color don't need the news to tell them whether or not racism exists, or at what levels, in our area because either they live it or they don't on a daily basis (perceived or real, overt or covert); and white people, while many may be interested to know how such a news story and its subject might reflect upon them, seldom have a need to make the subject of racism a priority in their day-to-day lives. They have the luxury of ignoring it, and some, far more than 10 percent I'd guess, make a conscious or -- more likely -- an unconscious choice to do just that much of the time. So I believe that to speculate that 90 percent of Toledoans would clear their calendars to watch a news story about local racism is an incredibly exaggerated speculation.

I gave a couple of hypothetical headlines-and I still stand by the premise:Racisim Sells. Ok, maybe only 85% would watch such a program.
