Performance enhancing drugs have somewhat overshadowed the sanctity of the game and the legitimacy of sports reporting.

How many a blind eye was turned on the syringes, pills, and integrity of the sport?

Moses Fleetwood Walker only needed a mustache to be arguably the sports most historically significant participant.

The cockiness of pro athletes pretty much precluded their being role models for me - starting with Joe Namath when I was a kid. I never had the sense that they were really doing anything heroic - just being entertainers. There is certainly nothing wrong with that - but for some reason, I was never compelled to look up to them.

My role models as a kid were mountain climbers and astronauts. Those guys had real skin in the game and there was something much more genuine about their endeavors.

Hillary Clinton lied about being named after Edmund Hillary, even though he was unknown at the time of her birth.

I wouldn't put it past mountain climbers and astronauts to get a little chemical edge, especially astronauts. Science and drugs go hand in hand. Ask your doctor.

Barry Sanders is still amazing to watch and he had a monk-like demeanor. It's a shame the NFL squandered one of its greatest players on a team committed to mediocrity.
