Keith Wilkowski Holds Commanding Lead In Likely 2009 Challenge To Carty Finkbeiner

The Wilkowski for Mayor Exploratory Committee today releases results of a poll showing former Lucas County Commissioner Keith Wilkowski would win a head-to-head race against incumbent Carty Finkbeiner by a margin of 59.2%-13.5% “if the election for Mayor of the City of Toledo were held tomorrow.” The survey of 300 likely Toledo voters was conducted earlier this month by Stanford H. Odesky & Associates and has a margin of error of +/-5.7%.

Significantly, the poll also found that only 15.9% of Toledo voters believe the city is “headed in the right direction” while 69% feel things “have gotten off on the wrong track.”

“Toledoans are hungry for change and they believe that Keith Wilkowski represents that change,” says Ben Krompak, a Toledo-based political consultant and Wilkowski supporter.

Wilkowski’s 45.7% lead is reflected in an initial head-to-head ballot question. It is not a result of respondents hearing positive or negative messaging on either candidate but rather a reflection of where voters stand based on the information they have today. After respondents received positive profiles of both candidates, Wilkowski builds on his lead, garnering 73.4% to Finkbeiner’s 11%, a margin of 62.4%.

Asked to identify major issues facing residents in Toledo today, an overwhelming majority of respondents (72.5%) expressed concerns related to the city’s economy.

“Now more than ever, fundamental changes are needed to turn Toledo around,” says Wilkowski.

“Throughout my career, I have worked to bring people together to find innovative solutions to tough problems. As we move forward in this exploratory process, I look forward to sharing with Toledoans my vision for our city’s future.”

A couple threads ahead of the 2005 mayoral election process :

September 2005 mayoral primary results (22% voter turnout) :

Carty Finkbeiner1528336.74%
Jack Ford1091026.23%

Rob Ludeman538612.95%
Opal Covey1100.26%
Don Gozdowski910.22%
Martin Okonski640.15%

Wilkowski waited until June 2005 to announce that he was running for mayor.

As to the two Lucas County Democrat Teams, Wilkowski is A-Team and Finkbeiner is B-Team.

March 12, 2007 Toledo Blade story titled Majority in survey give Finkbeiner poor rating :

More than 54 percent of likely voters in Toledo hold an unfavorable opinion of Mr. Finkbeiner, according to a citywide Blade/Zogby International poll. Fewer than one in four say they would re-elect Mr. Finkbeiner in 2009.

After two terms as mayor and a four-year hiatus, Mr. Finkbeiner unseated fellow Democrat Jack Ford in 2005 with about 62 percent of the vote. Going into that election Mr. Finkbeiner had a 68 percent approval rating. It fell to 53 percent before the November, 2006, election. It currently stands at 40.6 percent, about 10 points lower than Mr. Ford’s rating before he lost his re-election bid to Mr. Finkbeiner.

Almost 69 percent of respondents in the poll say Mr. Finkbeiner should be replaced in the 2009 election, although the poll indicates that a favored successor has yet to emerge.

"The survey of 300 likely Toledo voters was conducted earlier this month by Stanford H. Odesky & Associates ..."

May 25, 2005 Toledo Talk posting - Poll says Everybody would beat Ford :

News 11 and Stanford Odesky and Associates conducted a poll to see who people would prefer for the office of Mayor of Toledo. Former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner 34.3%; Mayor Jack Ford 20.7%; Councilman Rob Ludeman 10.3%; Undecided 33.7%.

Odesky has been doing local election polling for many years.

Feb 22, 2008 Toledo Free Press story - Stan Odesky hands research firm to his daughter :

After 40 years as a market research consultant, more than 20 of which as the owner of his firm, Stan Odesky drew a conclusion from all the data he has evaluated and all the personal and professional experience he could muster. Survey says: the time has arrived to pass the baton. Odesky still works in a consultative role and continues to research election projects, but he abdicated his title of president.

The March 2007 poll that showed Carty with a 40.6 percent approval rating was conducted by Zogby.

I lived in Rossford during the 1993 Toledo mayoral election between Carty Finkbeiner and Mike Ferner. I remember the local media projected Ferner the winner based upon exit polling. I think Finkbeiner refused to concede because he wanted to wait for more votes to be counted. Odesky may have provided that exit polling. Regardless, Carty's superpower has overcome negative poll results at least once before.

Carty is a good man! Sure he makes mistakes like the rest of us...no one is perfect but we definitely don't want another Jack Ford in office... Carty will continue to help Toledo improve it's image as he already has done by helping us win 3rd place in the World's Most Liveable City in the world contest. If there are things you'd like to see improve in Toledo, why not give Carty's office a call? If you don't do or say anything, you have no one to blame but yourself. - Derran Reebel

Everyone loves Carty. I demand a recount.

Derran, I HAVE written carty's office - with positive ideas and questions - never an answer.

Personally that third place bullshit is a friggin joke.

How 'bout you list some CONCRETE things Carty's done for the city. I could give two shits about winning a dandy plaque he can hang on his wall.

He's run us into the ground with his silly pet projects like ESM, the Hillcrest, the steam plant, etc. The MLK bridge is 16million over budget - who's accountable for that?? And keep up with the news about the Intermodal hub and listen to what's holding us back.

If that property was in wood county it'd be up and running right now.

Derran you need to switch to water - that koolaid you're drinking is warping your mind

Point 1: Key words: IF THE ELECTION WERE HELD TOMORROW. It isn't. The inner city loves Condo, and he will make sure he tosses them enough bones between now and then.

Point 2: Wilkowski is an asshole, too. I will not vote for either.

LUCAS COUNTY RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD AS MODEL COUNTY
Guest Columnist Keith Wilkowski

(WASHINGTON) Associated Press - The National Association of Counties (“NACo”) today announced that Lucas County, Ohio has been selected to receive NACo’s highest award, the Model County Award for the year 2050. Lucas County, located in Northwest Ohio on the shores of Lake Erie, was selected from among over 200 counties nominated for the prestigious award. Lucas County’s won the award on the basis of creatively reshaping government to efficiently and effectively meet the needs of its citizens.

Today, some thirty years after the city-county merger, Lucas County is recognized as the national leader in unified service delivery systems.

It turns out that Lucas County has finally become that “business-friendly” community everyone talks about, said Hanley, the RGP President. “It isn’t just marginally lower taxes that did it,” Hanley said, though that certainly helps sell Lucas County as a place to do business. The key factor, according to Hanley, is the region’s ability to immediately respond to development proposals with one, unified agency applying a cohesive set of development rules.

Lucas County’s unemployment rate has been the lowest in the State of Ohio for four years running and the county leads the State in the creation of new businesses and jobs. “There is no doubt that Lucas County is indeed a model for the nation”, concluded NACo President Adams. “This Model County Award is richly deserved”.

And as for Lucas County officials, they’re not resting on their laurels. Next on their agenda: consolidated service agreements with Michigan communities to the north and Wood County communities to the south.

The fictional column goes on for about 20 more paragraphs.

From the Aug 21, 2007 Blade story about the 21st Century Government Committee proposal :

Keith Wilkowski, a committee member and former Toledo mayoral candidate, was critical of the committee's progress when asked about it last month. Mr. Wilkowski accused some committee members at the time of being too conservative in their recommendations for change, but said yesterday that he was pleased with the group's final product. "I think there's a road map there to undertake some significant change," Mr. Wilkowski said. "But this all largely depends on where folks are willing to venture down the road."
