South End Grille Gone?

Don't know what happened, but couldn't get to TT for a few hours, and my post was erased in the meantime-will try again.

What is the deal with the South End Grille? (Glendale and Reynolds) I thought a few weeks ago they'd sold it and were under new management-huge canvas signs were hung over the old ones that now had the name as "THE SCAPE GOAT". A few weeks went by, and now it's locked and dark-sign on the door says: "The South End Grille is closed indefinitely" or something like that. Hmmm.... but I thought it was the "Scape Goat"? Anybody know what's going on?

I guess the old owners bought it back, made a new menu, ran it for a couple of weeks and then shut it down permanently... seems weird to me. But other than that, thats all that the folks at my store know.

Did the f^cking smoker ban have something to do with this? I know they were around for over a decade with fantastic business-until then. They were then literally empty inside, built the big patio, which was full for a while, but since it's stayed unusually cold the last year (by that I mean an early start to winter, plus winter hanging on forever-since no one's on a patio in the dead of winter), and I only saw a handful outside in recent weeks-and they looked pissed off and had heavy coats on. Next thing I knew, the name had changed.

All businesses are legal entities. Perhaps he's having credit issues, licensing issues, who knows.... There are many facets to operating a successful business. Look at all the other area copycat businesses that have went the way of thoughtful discourse.

So someone who doesn't agree with you is an "elitist fuck"? Compliment accepted.

You should take deep breathes and relax sometime. It slows down the aging process.

I've been self employed as a retail business owner (not food service) since 1974. I can tell you that the smoking ban and housing foreclosures, scant new housing starts and astronomical gas prices have joined forces to form the 'Perfect Storm' of frighteningly bad business conditions. We've never seen it this bad. Ever. In the past 2-1/2 years, through attrition, we have reduced our work force by 42%. I'm still profitable, but when someone quits we don't fill their position. To try to start a new business under these conditions is suicide unless you have real deep pockets to ride this out while you build a customer base. My advice to any independent thinking of starting a business is NOT NOW!

I have not slowed down at all. Actually we have picked up and are hiring three more guys (already started the interviewing process). Our phone is ringing off the hook from people that want to get their house painted this summer. Trust me we aren't cheap either and we are closing about 80% of our bids. We bid atleast 1 house everyday also. Don't know what everyone elses problem is.

Home Depot sucks these days, they used to be a very customer friendly store, I had heard some idiot high up in the company did something to piss off just about everyone with an hourly wage. That was a few years ago but seems to be about the same time they went downhill. I prefer Lowe's and now they are opening that new Menard's on Alexis, think I have a new place to shop. The only thing thats sad around that location is that when Home Depot and Lowe's went in they killed the Carter Lumber there on Telegraph.

Oh and by the way the count on hardware stores that have been in that area is 8. With 84 lumber still there and Menard's just opening being only about 5 miles apart.

Camaroman, are you just putting lipstick on all these housing whores that got burnt? Or do people just want to get high of the nauseous fumes to ease the pain?

I was thinking of starting a business to board up windows for people (haha) I meant banks.

Actually we use "green" paint now a days. And now these are people that have been in their homes for awhile and plan on staying there and just wanna spruce up the joint I guess.

As far as the box stores go I could care less if they all closed down. I wish there were still some good lumber yards left around here. I also miss the small town hardware stores where you could find any part you ever needed.

How about Beverly hardware at Detroit and Rugby? Nice old time feel in there and the dude has everything. Also, Fleeger's is pretty popular in the south end. Lots of old folks carrying in screens to be repaired, that's always a good sign.

I encourage people to at least consider shopping at Beverly Hardware. I am only a customer there, but I can see he's the old style of hardware guy that we're losing at a frightening pace. Sure, his prices are higher than for Home Depot and Harbor Freight, but he offers a value-add in his knowledge of the business.

He's getting older and it's unlikely somebody of his aptitude and service will replace him ... and when he's gone, we're going to miss him. So, as an interested customer, please consider shopping there.
