Rules about Parking on the Street?

Are there any rules about street parking concerning who can park in front of your house? My neighbor insists on parking in front of my house even though he has just as much room in front of his. The problem is it makes it more difficult for me to park in front of my house and it is ugly enough having one car in front of my house but with two I feel claustrophobic. Most of the time his space is free but I think he likes to park by my house because it is shady. Any ideas? I think it is kind of rude.

It IS rude - but not illegal, assuming this is a public street and not governed by homeowner association or mobile home park rules.

He will have to leave enough space (6') for the two new containers we recieve if we go to automated pickup. If he doesn't I would have him ticketed in a heart-beat.

I had the same problem with neighbors parking in front of my house while empty spots remained in front of theirs. What I did was water my grass when they parked there especially after they had washed there car. I guess I didnt notice all the mud being splashed up. I really felt bad the day I used the sprinkler since they had left the top down.

The grass was worn away where he parks his car and passengers get in and out. I planted grass seed and he and his passengers just walk on it. Oh, he sets his garbage cans on my frontage also so his will be clear.

Perhaps a talk with him and explaining your situation. Sometimes, as my father (who passed 3 years ago today) used to say, You get more flies with honey than vinegar"

If that doesn't work, start parking your car and garbage cans in front of his house. Make sure you make some nice 'wear spots' too.

"Grass was worn away were he parks his car and passengers get in and out." Sounds like a good area to wet down really good to make grass grow. His "guests" can track the mud into his home. Though I wouldn't bother to plant any grass seed.

Parking is always a problem. I changed where I parked since I fell victim to theft. That change put me on a street with much higher traffic, hence I was safer for increasing exposure and decreasing crawling (casing) drive-bys. However, it also put me in front of a neighbor's house. Soon enough, they spoke to me about it and complained that I parked too far forward (nearly to the driveway line) for the wife of the couple to comfortably pull out. I pulled back and compromised the 3rd parking space on that stretch of curb. We now only have two, and occasionally somebody parks in the 2nd spot and I have to park somewhere else for a few hours to a day.

We can do this. We can make the public spaces work for us, if only we make compromises. I didn't want to cross two spaces and cost other parkers, but I had to compromise to live with the neighbors. I'm sure in return they have compromised with allowing my rusty car to remain parked in front of their house. In a compromise, everybody gets accommodated, and nobody's fully happy with the results. But everybody gets to live with each other in harmony.

Why not just try to talk to them? My neighbors love to call the city on me for everything from placing my trash can on the side of my house instead of in the back of the house to parking on my lawn for a few days when I sealed my driveway. If they would have just come to me and asked about the situation then I wouldn't have to TP their houses, distribute anonymous letters to other neighbors about how their uneducated kids smoke/sell pot, empty my cat boxes on their sidewalks or egg their cars when I go for my late night runs.
