Toledo govt's hypocrisy toward music acts

Jun 29, 2007 WNWO story titled Major Outcry after Raunchy Band Performs in Downtown Toledo

Accusations are flying after a raunchy band with a history of performing sex acts on stage was hired to play Toledo's "Rally by The River. But the woman who hired them says it's all a surprise to her.

Members of the all-girl band MT-TV, have quite a history of performing nude and having sex with each other, and fans, on stage.

A Toledo police officer working security there, who didn't want to go on camera, tells us, the lead singer was not wearing underwear---and frenzied fans were tossing money at her.

The director of Citi fest says, she believes the lead singer was wearing underwear. But she did ask the groups manager to, in her words, tone down the show. She also says her office hasn't gotten any complaints.

I have no problem with this band's "art." Looks like a nice fit for Frankie's.

But I'm wondering why a taxpayer-funded org brought this band into Toledo? What about the City's involvement earlier this year with the Gator'z nightclub that's a privately-owned business?

Feb 2, 2007 Toledo Free Press story titled ‘Safety concerns' cancel concert

Through the urging of Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner and police Chief Mike Navarre, the owner of a Toledo nightclub has canceled a planned concert by hip hop duo Ying Yang Twins.

In a Feb. 1 City of Toledo news release, Finkbeiner and Navarre said they were addressing concerns Bancroft Hills neighborhood residents had about concert goers, leaving the scheduled Feb. 13 Ying Yang Twins show at Gator'z Bar & Grill, 2567 W. Bancroft St., “intoxicated” and creating “disturbances.” Gator'z owner Michael Howard, the release said, elected to cancel the concert.

“There have been past incidents of violence after Ying Yang Twins concerts in other cities,” Finkbeiner said in the release. “They chose the wrong venue. We can't have the potential of violence in our neighborhoods, and Gator'z is in a neighborhood.”

Brian Schwartz, Finkbeiner's spokesman, cited a 1998 concert in Ottawa Park that featured Ying Yang Twins as reason to prevent the Gatorz show from happening. At that event, he said, concertgoers brought weapons and set off fireworks creating a “great deal of disorder.” Schwartz also cited an incident in Miami involving the group as reason the city urged Howard to cancel the Feb. 13 show.

Rock critic Dave Marsh, biographer of The Who, Bruce Springsteen and author of the book, “50 Ways to Fight Censorship,” said Ying Yang Twins are a pop group, not a hip-hop group, and the efforts to cancel the concert are “ignorant.”

“Are they policing after your hockey team plays? Are they going to police the drunks after the Super Bowl parties?” Marsh said.

“This is from an ignorant politician and bigoted cops who are not even listening to this music. It sounds like you have a mayor who likes to take the First Amendment and the Constitution into his own hands and rip it in half.”

Hah! Carty did that in January.

Apr 20, 2007 TFP story titled Gator'z sticks with rock to avoid conflicts with City

Gator'z Bar & Grill near UT will host only rock music concerts to avoid problems with the City of Toledo, said Michael Howard, Gator'z owner.

“I guess the city didn't like the idea of having rap concerts here and decided safety was a concern, so I'm just going along with them,” Howard said. “Obviously they don't feel safety is a concern with rock music.”

The government gets involved in a private business, but it does not monitor its own entertainment venue.
