US EPA sued over farm runoff,, finally

The Blade yesterday:

Environmental groups sue EPA for water rules

West Palm Beach, Fla --

Five environmental groups sued the U.S Environmental Protection Agency yesterday, claiming the federal government is violating the Clean Water Act by failing to set standards for farm and urban runoff that is polluting Florida's waterways.

The groups say rain sends the runoff--fertilizers and animal waste--into rivers and lakes, contaminating waterways and nourishing algae blooms that poison the ecosystems.
The federal alwsuit was filed by the Florida Wildlife Federation, The Sierra Club, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, the Environmental Confederation of Southwest Florida, and the St. Johns Riverkeeper.

The article doesn't mention the pesticides which are among the worst possible chemicals to have in your drinking water. They present known hazards via carcinogenic potential and causing fish to grow egg tissue in their nuts.

Farmers have been a major source of pollution for years without any consequences. Finally someone is trying to do something about it.

I'd like to say it was more , but so far all its done is put American topsoil(corn raised badly) on the Dubai oil market. Soil mining for transportation fuels isn't good. It increases chemical and soil runoff into the river too. The farming practices used in the Maumee River watershed are what make it the largest sediment and chemical dumper, greater than all other great lakes streams and rivers Combined.

I recall that farmers use to plow under the stalks, now they feed them to CAFO pigs. Soon they'll be sending all stalks from all crop types to an ethanol plant, just as soon as the enzymes are developed. They are working hard on that at multiple places. There is 85% mineral loss in US farm raised vegetables since the 1900's , its going to get worse. Time to go back to being two year olds and eat some dirt with our nnutritionally dead ass breakfast cereal.
