Buckeye Cable / NBC

"NBC24's retransmission agreement with Buckeye Cable, owned by Block Communications Incorporated, is set to expire on July 31. We are currently in negotiations with Buckeye and we are hopeful that we can reach a new agreement before the deadline.

We do not want to see NBC24 news and entertainment programs removed from the Buckeye system. However, federal law allows local TV stations to negotiate with cable TV companies for compensation to permission to retransmit their signal through subscriber-based services."

Yeah...I'd really hate to miss the broadcast excellence of Shenikwa Stratford & David Custer. Good move Blizzard Bill!

How will I watch the Olympics!

Get satellite. Either one - Direct TV or the Dish it doesnt matter. You'll wonder why you ever had cable to begin with. We have satellite AND have saved our antennae tower too. We can record two programs simultaneously (DVR) while watching a third. God willing, I'll never ever be tied to cable again. Best thing I did was to dump 'em.

If you want to see Ch. 24 stay on Buckeye's lineup, it might be a good idea to call Buckeye! (419.724.9800 or askus@cablesystem.com)

Direct TV charges extra for local channels and extra tvs out here in Swanton. We're about to switch back to one of those phone/internet/cable combo packs. For now,, my good old rabbit ears are working just fine in the room without Direct TV

Unfortunately rabbit ears will be useless after this coming February.

swantucky - my neighbor had the cable combo and switched back to multi service providers. Too many times when he lost service and when he lost service - well - you lose everything.

JeepMaker you can still use rabbit ears as long as they go into the input on a digital tuner either external or built into the TV.

I did see a segment on the news showing what other programs are paid.

"Here is an example of what cable TV companies paid to outside program services per subscriber, per month in 2006:

ESPN
$2.91 [$3.26 in 2007]
Fox Sports $1.67
TNT $0.89
Disney $0.79
Fox News $0.75
USA $0.47
CNN $0.44
Nickelodeon $0.41
TBS $0.39
FX $0.35 "

  • source - 24news wnwo.com

They said they only are requesting a fraction of what others are being paid.

So whats the amount? I spoke with Buckeye cable and they said they are requesting 8x the amount of a normal channel. And the $2+ for ESPN for the subscription channels not the free ESPN on regular Buckeye.

One more question I have. Will the money they are requesting be put back in the local economy at WNWO or is it going back to Bradner Communications in Chicago?

JeepMaker,
My old rabbit ears work just fine with the digital converter box I have them hooked up to. In fact, my reception improved dramatically and I was able to expand mt channel selection from about 6 clear channels to more then 12.

I might be dropping buckeye for the dish real soon as they will not be carrying NHL Center Ice again this season.

Humm... These seem like channels one would NOT be able to get over the air for free anyways. Perhaps they should compare the prices of LOCAL ABC/NBC/CBS affiliates!

ESPN $2.91 [$3.26 in 2007]
Fox Sports $1.67
TNT $0.89
Disney $0.79
Fox News $0.75
USA $0.47
CNN $0.44
Nickelodeon $0.41
TBS $0.39
FX $0.35

transcom - I have no preference for one satellite company over the other, however Dish seems to have extensive channels dedicated to NHL coverage. Check their web site.

ToledoLatina - I did confirm that the negotiations are between Buckeye and Barrington Broadcasting out of Chicago (area). WNWO's management has not been involved in the discussions.

Barrington's website: http://www.barringtontv.com/index.html

Interesting to see that they have delayed their 2nd quarter earnings until Aug 5th, AFTER the contract with Buckeye ends. Their 1st quarter report show that they are down a few million from 07's 4th quarter: http://www.barringtontv.com/files/q12008quarterlyreport.pdf

It appears Buckeye Cable will be able to carry NBC until 08/24/2008. It is unknown at this point what will happen after that.

Fresh from the WNWO website...

"The current retransmission agreement between NBC24, WNWO-TV and Buckeye Cable was set to expire at midnight tonight, July 31, 2008. We continue to negotiate with Buckeye on a new agreement. It does not appear that an agreement can be reached before the deadline.

As a courtesy to Buckeye subscribers and as a demonstration of good faith in our negotiations, NBC24 will extend retransmission consent through the end of the Summer Olympic Games, Sunday, August 24, to allow all viewers to enjoy this historic event.

It is our hope that we can conclude a new agreement soon."

YEA!!!! I can watch our USA team bring home some GOLD!!!

Actually, that is a good move by WNWO. Their ratings should improve with the Olympics so they will have some higher numbers with which to negotiate. I bet they were also worried about ticking off any potential viewers who might have only tuned in for the games.

It will be interesting to see what happens in late August.
