Anybody ever had to battle Yellowjackets?

Looks like the little buggers are building a nest in a crack between a couple bricks on my porch.

Anybody had any luck killing off a nest? Ive been told you dont go at them from the outside...

Phooey on that noise. Get the little bastards before they multiply. Use that spray that's in the huge can, and comes out in a BIG SOLID STREAM-not a spray. Made for killing wasps, hornets, yellowjackets, etc. Saturate everything. Wait until the sun just starts to go down and the varmints should all be there ready to sleep, as they are not nocturnal. Once should do it, but keep an eye on it for a while, also if there are any you missed, they may try to build somewhere nearby. I haven't even seen any by my place this year, but I had to get rid of some last year.

While you'd be tempted to use the Detroit Red Wings, they did surprisingly well against them this season. Your best bet is to take advantage of the Nasvhille team... They've won 18 of the last 21 matches between the two.

Wait... oh... Yellow Jackets. I thought you said Blue Jackets. Get the spray, and get prepared to hide. If you don't get them all, they get pissed.

We had a horrible time with them a couple of years ago. It's best to "go at them" when it's cool, early morning worked best for us! Like Darkseid said, get the stuff that shoots out a solid stream, some are foamy, some are more liquid, the foam one worked best for us. Don't try to "trap" them, you want to catch them when they don't realize what's going on. Once you're certain they're dea, you need to do your best to try and seal off the area they're going to because they'll just come back. Worst case scenario, there are exterminators you can call to help as well! Good luck!

I understand they're nesting in your porch, but are they in an area that you might 'disturb' when you use the porch? Are they a 'threat' or is it just the idea that them being there is troublesome?

I'd say leave them alone if they are not an 'imminent threat'. Normally, if you don't piss them off, they won't piss you off.

Only problem with that is, if you leave them alone, you may wind up with a huge colony in a few years.

Sure, spray them and try to kill them! Didn't we just go through a similar attack like that in Lima? I think you should gently go up to the nest and ask them to kindly leave. If they refuse, put nasty "post it" notes all around the hive.
It's part of the kindler, gentler way of doing things that the public wants.
If you do end up killing them, be prepared for Jesse Yellowjackson to show up, form protest marches, and demand your removal or resignation.

Best thing i ever found for any bee wasp whatever, Spidernot, yeah its for spiders but oh man instant death for bees and wasps. Just as long as your spraying brick or something that wont stain, DO not spray it on any kind of painted siding, will stain badly. We are talking death in 5 seconds for any bugs it touches, got a halfway decent stream about 5- 8 feet away, aim spray, douse and clean em all up later.

Maumee or Sylvania Southview.

Wait... are your Yellow Jackets in Perrysburg? If not, disregard.

are they in an area that you might 'disturb' when you use the porch?

Yes, there's about a 3' high brick flowerbox along the front of my house, it ends at the porch (actually makes a nice place to sit when you're on the porch. They've found a small crack between the bricks that I hadnt noticed before - it's about calf-high.

Are they a 'threat' or is it just the idea that them being there is troublesome?

Worrisome till yesterday - Then the wife got stung. Everything I've read on the net say they tend to become aggressive in late summer. So, they need to go -

Thanks folks, I'll go out today and find something nasty and hose em.

Once you're certain they're dead, you need to do your best to try and seal off the area they're going to because they'll just come back.

Have you ever seen where you can buy the tubes that look just like caulk tubes, but cement comes out? Used em last year to repair a concrete sill - Ive got one left - I'll be sealing that up just as soon as Im confident the little bastards are dead.

Gotta be sure they're dead, because behind the brick they've found is just the dirt of the flower bed, so if I dont kill em, and just seal the hole, they also live in dirt, so they could just burrow upward and still be a problem.

Thanks everyone, I'll post again after the 'war' and let you know the results.

Oh, and Summitst, Im pretty confident - back in the 70's the Perrysburg Yellajackets were no match for the Eastwood Eagles!

"One swarm, One Eagle..." que the Clint Eastwood music. Im off to buy some spray and some of those little cigars...

Whatever you do, be careful. Years ago my Dad ran over a nest of them he didn't even know was there. Got stung like 8 or 9 times on the lower leg. It ballooned up at least triple it's normal size. He had to go the the ER for a shot.

That's why you want to use that pressurized stream of bugkiller. It shoots quite a distance.

Beneficial insect? Tell that to my aching, throbbing leg! The little bastards were holing up right at our front door! (note the word "were"). Heh heh heh

Thanks, Holland, for the OSU Extension link. We ought to get past stereotyping the world. The human brain used to handle more variables until we drugged ourselves.
