Why is it that the women in this sport wear skimpy bikinis and the men wear long shorts and loose tops? It's not fair. My husband just lives for what I call the "flying crotch shot" and we women get nothing in turn from the men's side. I want speedos and washboard abs.

Exactly what I've been discussing with everyone since I first watched women's beach volleyball.
If playboy magazine held a volleyball tournament and required that type of outfit, women's groups from all over would be screaming.
I'm not saying that I don't enjoy it, it's just one of those things that I expected to be causing an uproar but hasn't.
Eh, between the chinese gynmasts, the Spanish basketball team, and... well... this, I think the outfits of the beach volleyball team are the least of their concerns.
Besides, none of them have had a wardrobe malfunction yet.

I'll bet there are plenty of women, such as myself, who look at the attire of the women volleyball athletes and go "Oh come on". That choice of attire is purposeful and the purpose isn't to increase their athleticism. It's to increase their audience. I feel sorry for any Mom who has a daughter who is a decent vollyball player. If she aspires to the reach the top of her sport she'll have to practically publicly disrobe to succeed.
I'll bet there are some seriously talented female volleyball players who don't quite make the grade in that skimpi a bikini either. Too bad for them. They wouldn't make the team.
Now, is there a source for a poster of Phelps in that shot jr posted, cause I want a big one! I'll hang it next to one of Misty May-Treanor. Just to keep hubby happy.
About the wardrobe malfunction - It's bad enough they have to wear those perky little swim cap ear thingys but Come on! Get a suit that fits.

I haven't watched much Olympic coverage this year, but I always remember male swimmers and divers being quite...fit. :)
As far as the volleyball apparel goes...I remember when they started wearing basically bathing suit bottoms for high school volleyball back when I was still in high school (15+ years ago). Always seemed to me like a pedophile's dream, to have 2 squads of bouncing young girls in bikini bottoms officially sanctioned by the schools.
Not sure whether there is any legitimate athletic reason to wear them? Seems like the same movement objectives could be achieved by wearing form fitting shorts? But I really don't care one way or the other as far as the adult Olympians go...though if it starts moving down to junior high girls, I might object a little once my daughter is old enough to play. lol
Just caught some waterpolo. Speedos, washboard abs, broad shoulders, great buns, the total experience. For once my husband had to sit there while I oogled. Very nice. Enough fantasies to last me a month at least.
Oh come on! Would everyone get over it?! It's BEACH volleyball. What do people wear at the beach? It's not a big deal until someone makes a big deal out of it. Sounds like someone is jealous.
Jealous. Nah, that's not it. After 41 years of marriage, and as my hubby is 70, I don't care what revs his engine as long as he parks the car in my garage only. There is something unseemly about women wearing excessively skimpy clothing when it isn't necessary for the sport. If they don't need to be that unfetterd then why?
The undisputed truth is much of the Summer Olympics, and hence it's millions of television viewers, have always been about sexy eye candy and drama.
Sports like swimming, regular volleyball, beach volleyball, gymnastics, certain track and field events and others provide pretty pictures of young men and women in their athletic prime and the 'agony and ecstasy', as Wide World of Sports used to say, of victory and/or defeat.
It's made-to-order prime time television watching and the more sexed up the better.
Kinda like the Romans in the Colesium during the days of Caeser, except thankfully nobody hardly ever dies.
Uh Huh. 52" HD TV. Coming riiiiiight at ya. Larger than life.
And it's not just the television viewers with sex often on their minds.
A different kind of "contact" sport. And the ultimate "I'll call you. I promise".
All the women in the olympics are flat-chested, though. Maybe that's why they accentuate the butts. ;^)
