IPCC 'wrong' on logging threat to climate

Pristine temperate forest stores three times more carbon than currently estimated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and 60% more than plantation forests, according to research in Australia.

The finding increases their potential role in combating global warming and strengthens the need to protect them, says lead author Brendan Mackey of the Australian National University in Canberra.

Mackey and colleagues used remote sensing and direct sampling to study eucalyptus trees at 240 sites across a 14.5-million hectare swathe of natural forest in south-east Australia. (cont.)

Does a "pristine temperate forest" store more "carbon" because it produces more carbon dioxide? Seems to me to support the fact that 98% of the worlds carbon dioxide production is from PLANTS, not evil capitalist SUV drivers and manufacturers.

"Plants also emit CO2 during respiration, so it is only during growth stages that plants are net absorbers. For example a growing forest will absorb many tons of CO2 each year, however a mature forest will produce as much CO2 from respiration and decomposition of dead specimens (e.g. fallen branches) as used in biosynthesis in growing plants. Regardless of this, mature forests are still valuable carbon sinks, helping maintain balance in the Earth's atmosphere. Additionally, and crucially to life on earth, phytoplankton photosynthesis absorbs dissolved CO2 in the upper ocean and thereby promotes the absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere." (source)
