NBC 24 and Buckeye Cable won't play nice

It's 11:06pm and 24 is still on...is midnight the magic hour for transmission to end??

I thought is was pretty weird how NBC24 was pushing directv. Have they given up on the cable, or just applying pressure to cable?

Funny how they didn't bother to push Dish Network. You'd think they'd "play fair".

Just about 1am and still on for me too!

According the guide, the olympics is scheduled to go off at 3:35am, so we'll see tomorrow I guess

Nobody is awake to "pull" the plug anyhow :)

...the 24 management would have to call Buckeye and give them whatever notice was stated in the last retransmission contract for buckeye to shut down the retansmission anyhow

I honestly don't think NBC24 will risk alienating all of their "loyal" customers. I don't typically watch their news shows, but I do enjoy some of the primetime shows.

It seems to me that even if NBC24 wasn't directly compensated with cash, they were made more accessible by being rebroadcast via buckeye....if you make something available more conveniently, it would seem that they would have 150,000+ more potential customers that their local advertisers could broadcast to

You'd still be able to get the Detroit NBC outlet anyway. About all you'd be losing is (as someone else here stated a while back) the broadcasting excellence of Shenikwa Stratford and What's -his-Name.

Lets remember that if 24 gets compensated by Buckeye then the price people pay for their cable service will go up. So, personally I would rather not pay additional for 24 on my cable and watch it on regular broadcast for free when there is a show on I'm interested in.

In November of 2006, WNWO published the names and addresses of current CHL license (concealed weapons permit) holders, which, in the eyes of many, put some of these folks in potentially dangerous situations. At that time, state law permitted journalists to 'view' the list, they were not permitted to publish it, but Ch. 24 did an 'end run' around the law and published the list anyway.

From that day forward, WNWO ceased being a channel available on my television, so I care not whether Buckeye picks them up or not, and, as apophistoledo pointed out, if Buckeye caves in, then rates will just go up.

Screw Channel 24. (And screw Buckeye AND all that Block owns along with it!)

GOOD CALL! I'd forgotten about that. Channel 24 and The City Paper BOTH did that crap. Can't remember if Block's rag did or not. I know my Brother was really pissed about it.

NBC24 doesn't mention in their little commercial that the channels they listed as being compensated at a higher rate are not even close to their little local station. They used ESPN, CNN, Fox News in their comparison. That's like comparing a NYC Broadway show to a Jr. High play. Get real 24.

They also don't mention that they are the ones that will remove themselves from Buckeye. It's not Buckeye that wants to remove them.

Loving or hating the Blocks has nothing to do with any of it. WNWO has been making staff cuts for months now. They are just trying to increase their bottom line. There's nothing wrong with that, but blaming Buckeye isn't the way to achieve their goal. Try increasing sales in advertising or local productions. Der.

I wasn't aware The City Paper did that. No problem. I don't read that one anyway. And the Blah didn't do it. Gotta give them credit for that - unlike the Sandusky paper that did.

From Channel 24 website
Monday, August 25, 2008 at 11:16 a.m.

As of Sunday, August 24, a 10-day extension has been granted to Buckeye Cablesystems to carry NBC24's signal. Retransmission negotiations will continue during this time period.

NBC24 will remain on Buckeye Cable through the Labor Day holiday.

GG:The City Paper (which USED to be the best printed source of news/information in the town-example being their Jeep shooting expose'-but since then has just become another liberal rag-typified by their secret identity spokesman, "Johnny Hildo")recieved threats over that (rightly so, IMHO). It was bullshit, and was only done because they're anti-gun ownership.

You may want to check into whether Buckeye can rebroadcast the Detroit NBC affiliate. I talked to folks who know the industry and they told me that Buckeye can only show programs that do not overlap WNWO. In other words, I don't get to see Heroes or Chuck. Basically, none of the primetime shows will be available because Toledo has an NBC affiliate.

I don't give a rat's arse about their news - it sucks - but don't take away my brain-rotting nerd shows!! I will be buying an antenna or switching to DirecTV unless they get this worked out.

As for 24 distorting who is at fault because Buckeye is not "throwing them off the air..." That's a little like saying you should continue to work for your employer even though they refuse to increase your pay over time. Do they deserve more money? I have no idea, but I bet ratings are only part of the equation. For instance, all the stations had to add the high-def equipment - has there been a rate increase since then?

A pair of Bunny Ears and a Digital conversion box ($9.00 at Walmart with the Coupon) and you can still get channel 24 as well as 24-2 (retro TV network) and 24-3 (24 hr weather)

It's what I use right now and channel 24 has never been clearer on my set then it is now.

Oh internets, is there anything you can't do.

You can watch on your flat screen with better sound.
