Sonic is here!!

My daughter works in Perrysburg and was invited to a pre-opening celebration and 50% off coupon. So she took me, cuz you know how I've been waiting for the darn thing to open. Well anyways, when we got there at 11:30am it was quite dead. It was really cool looking, bays that you pulled in to and order from your car and if your paying with a debit card you just slide it in. There were workers with skates on ready to deliver the orders. I was greeted by a Manager maybe owner, who asked us what we thought. I saw something on the menu that intrigued me..Ocean Water. Was it a salty water? But he explained what it was, some sort of tropical fruity blue in color water. Even brought me a sample. It wasn't for me, but I could see my kids going crazy over it.

So anyways, my daughter and I decided to order 2 meals and split it so we get to sample 2 things. One was a footlong chili dog and the other a toasted bacon cheeseburger meal. One fry and the other tator tots. I must say the hotdog was alright but that's because I favor Rudy's big time. The cheeseburger was very tasty, as were the tator tots and Fries.

The menu has a lot to chose from. I want to try their slushies next trip. I plan on going back.

Get ready they're open tomorrow(on my birthday)

Are they going to put tire-chains on those roller skates this winter?

Looks like enough fat, cholesterol, and sodium to keep you obese and in poor health... things that apparently don't matter to people enjoying the finer things in life. :)

Happy Birthday TL!

Thank you for the birthday wishes. (it was a shameless plug to get well wishes since my kids forget)

Sonic is located in front of Meijers on the old state route 20.

I remember when Toledo had new restaurants popping up all the time, now we have nothing. This was just something new to the taste pallet and I enjoyed it.

Let me know what you all think if you go and try it.

That's what kids do - forget.
As long as hubby doesn't forget!
(I think that's why The Great Spirit invented women - to remind us guys of birthdays, anniversaries and all those other special occasions...and yes, maybe to help find our way on long trips!)

I think they all work for Hallmark, are spies for Rand McNally, and have stock in Hershey's! :)

So has anyone made the trip to Sonic? Heard they have a staging area set up in Meijers parking lot because their bays have been so packed.
Just wondering...

Hot dogs like RUDY'S?? GAHHHHHHH PTUI! GARBAGE! If they taste ANYTHING like Rudy's gut-wrenching trash, I'll NEVER try them. That's another local place/chain that's lived solely on their reputation for several decades. Unless they do all their business on take-out, I don't know how the one close to me stays in business (Glendale). They're ALWAYS empty. Have been for years.

I used to go to Rudy's quite a bit when the food still wasn't too bad. But once they tore down the original place and built the brand new one next to it, plus opened more outlets, that was it. I remember they fired all their waitresses, since they went to the military/'cafeteria' style wait-on yourself lines. Also the food turned to pure shit. I had stopped eating there for about eight years or so, when one night a guy I worked with asked if I wanted hi to bring anything back, he was going out for lunch. I'd planned to go out myself, but figured I'd relax and gave him 5 bucks. He wasn't sure where he was going to stop. Naturally....I was really pissed when he brought rudy's dogs back. I took one bite and spit it into the trash. I thought maybe if I threw the buns away and washed them off in the sink, I'd get rid of that hideous brackish taste (which I figured was in the meat sauce). Took a bite of a sparkling nude dog, and there was that taste again-it's IN THE DOGS-they have to soak them in some sort of brine crap. Threw all in the trash and got a TERRIBLE , but at least edible, sandwich out of the cafeteria machine. That was the eighties. I thought about two years ago I'd try one again, just in fairness, on the outside chance they'd taste like they did in the seventies again. One bite-spit it out. Got sick to my stomach later. If I worked for the BOH, I'd be trying everything in my power to shut them down.

END OF RANT Sorry, Latina, but you caused old unpleasant memories to resurface.

Rudy's, Manos, and Packo's all have the same thing in common. People either adore their food-or they DESPISE it(put me in the latter category). There's no in-between.

My vote...Manos sucks...its dirty, greasy, and waaay too popular

posted by justareviewer on Sep 10, 2008 at 08:27:38 am     #

Last time I went to Manos (for weekday lunch) it was pretty good, but I got something light.

And I really like the Rudys in the point, dogs are always good there.

Not a fan of Packos dogs, just too much stuff on it or something. Kinda of pricey too at $2.49 each side dish.

JustAReviewer: I went to Manos ONCE-got the 'sampler plate', which was supposed to be a little of everything on their menu. Quite a bit of food-and EVERYTHING TASTED EXACTLY THE SAME!! Due to using the same spices, no doubt. As you said, greasy, and sat in my stomach like a rock for hours. Bleh.

posted by Darkseid on Sep 10, 2008 at 09:19:38 am     #

And it all tasted bad, BTW.

posted by Darkseid on Sep 10, 2008 at 09:20:40 am     #

i had Mano's once. The only thing that was ok was the salad, never went back. Mel-o-creme on woodville road has good dogs, and the greasy spoon on front used to (havent been there in ages so i dont know if they're still good).

posted by tm2 on Sep 10, 2008 at 10:44:03 am     #

Oh, YEAH!! The CENTRAL HOT DOG (where they got the name for it, I'll never know-since it's on Front Street-they should have kept the name they had in the 50s-THE ROUNDHOUSE). The same guy used to own the IDEAL hot dog joints(does still, for all I know), but the place on Front still always tasted better(?). And Mel-O-Creme has good ones too. Actually, some days, depending on which meat sauce they use, Rally's chili dogs aren't TOO bad.

posted by Darkseid on Sep 10, 2008 at 11:55:12 am     #

There's a Mel-O-Creme closer to me, on Airport Highway, going towards the Airport from Reynolds, in case anyone didn't know. Too bad they're just seasonal. Same way with the barn-like place in Holland that has the drive-thru, their dogs are sensational.

posted by Darkseid on Sep 10, 2008 at 11:57:49 am     #

Finally were are discussing something important. Hummmmmmmmm.

I'm gonna try Sonic this week/weekend. Never been to one. But Mel-O-Creme sounds like the ticket, and I will give Central Hot Dog a whirl.

Ocean Water is just Blue Coconut and Sprite. :)

The Chicken Toaster is probably my favorite there...though the tenders, which are pretty much the same thing, fill the spot too.

Drinks wise...depends. Given that they are new up there, it is hard to say if they have the mixing on the flavors right. Can't go wrong withe Lime-aids, slushes, or vanilla Dr. Pepper. Their ice cream I've never been fond of...so I would probably pass on that.

I just made the journey to the famed "Sonic"

After a 1/2 hour wait in the "staging" lane, we finally got to the "bay". You place your order at the menu board and they bring out your food and collect your money. After that, at least 2 different people came to the car and asked if we needed anything.

My review: The wait was worth it. I'm sure as time goes on the novelty will die down. The burgers are hot and delicious. There is a wide range of items to choose from. The price is slightly higher compared to other fast food joints, but it's worth it. Every Sonic employee that I interacted with was pleasant and very customer service oriented. Not what I've got at other fast food joints. If I have to pay a little more to be appreciated as a customer, I'll do it. I also tipped the roller waitress. I guess that's an acceptable practice.
I hope the enthusiasm lasts as long as they do.
Go Sonic!

Well, if they ever decide to build one a little closer to me, like somewhere in toledo, I'll eventually check it out. Otherwise, no. With gas always going to be close to 4 dollars a gallon from now on, I ain't drivin' all the way to Perrysburg for a burger.

TAHL - Awesome. I figured we were every where. :-P Shame you are stuck in Big 10 country. /throwup LOL

Tipping at Sonic is a norm. Sonic is actually based here in OKC, so they are on every street corner it seems. They are usually really good and always making sure you have what you need.

The one thing I like about them, compared to other fast food, I can still get breakfast in the evening if that is what I want. :)

posted by JustaSooner on Sep 10, 2008 at 11:49:08 pm     #

Now THAT is a humoungous plus for a fast-food chain/place. Many times I've wished for a BK breakfast sandwich late at night, to no avail.

Still not driving to perrysburg for it, though. LOL

I probably will someday. It’s only a 20 minute cruise from Point Place. Plus, PBurg has so much else to offer. Levis is awesome.

But Sonic definitely looks like something that should be consumed in moderation. Like once or twice a year, LOL!

posted by Ryan on Sep 11, 2008 at 02:39:34 pm     #

I'll in all probability never even see Levis. No interest whatsoever.

My girl and I sat in the waiting lane, but it was as a good experience. I hadn't been to one in years and they have changed their menu a bit.

I recommend the strawberry banana milkshake :) also their onion rings are very unique to them (almost a light sweet taste to them) makes me think of going to a fair.

Plus the option to get chili and cheese on any of your carbs is fun. Chili fries and chili tots.

Also agree being able to get a breakfast sandwich at 4pm is great. I think a lot of people have craved an egg muffin at 8pm at one point.

Taking the future in-laws there this Sunday.
