Low levels of Arctic sea ice signal global warming's advance

This year will see the second-biggest loss on record of Arctic sea ice — a sign that the area of ice coverage is shrinking at a pace faster than once expected.

The trend also suggests that global warming is likely to increase, polar bear habitat will decline and previously icebound areas could be opened to oil and gas exploration.

Mark Serreze, a senior scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, said Tuesday that the sea-ice minimum, which will be reached later this month, won't hit last year's record because the amount of daylight is decreasing in the Arctic and a new freeze is beginning.

But the minimum amount of ice at summer's end this year will be near last year's total. In 2007, the extent of Arctic ice was 23 percent lower than the previous record in 2005. That 2007 total, which set a record, was 1.65 million square miles. As of Monday, satellite observations showed 1.78 million square miles.

Arctic sea ice is important because it reflects most sunlight, keeping polar regions cool and producing a cooling effect at lower latitudes. Open water, in contrast, absorbs the sun's energy, and the warm ocean waters mean more ice melting, the National Snow and Ice Data Center says.

Since OPEC is trying to crank oil prices up-there is a positive side to this.

i wish you gloabal warming people would just learn about long term and short term solar cycles.

the entire solar system is warming up. 2012 is the peak of the long and short maximum. after that we will see a gradual decline of solar activity just like it has been doing for millions of years.

1. google "solar maximum"
2. read it
3. send the link to AL Gore
4. STFU
5. ?????
6. profit

STD, perhaps you should google "solar minimum". Because that's where we are right now.

sigh

we are in a short term minimum.

short cycles run anywhere from 10-12 years.

yes, currently we are in a short term minimum, which is why we have seen global temperature DECREASES over the last 5 years. we are at the bottom of this short cycle. between now and december of 2012 we will see an increase in solar activity/sunspots/CME's (as a result of magnetic storms on the surface of the sun).

once we pass the short cycle maximum in 2012 we will begin to cool again for about 5-6 years, then heat up again for another 5-6 years.

that's the short cycle.

you should read up on the long cycle.

these two cycles work in conjunction with each other. 2012 just so happen to be a dual maximum, which means the peak of the long and the short are cresting/peaking in unison sometime in mid to late december.

the last time we had a long term minimum was back in the mid 1600's

you may recall this is right around the time we had the first of the three "little-ice ages" in recorded history.

long term cycles have a much greater impact on climate than the short, but when the two bottom out, or max out in unison, thats when we see the extreames in climate.

Al Gore knows this, thats why he bagan his whole global warming bullshit just before the last maximum cycle peaked.

we'll be hearing much more about gloabl warming as soon as this minimum passes.

2012 will be the height of the hysteria

after that things will cool off again just as they have since the earth started orbiting it.

That's simply a lie. The climate continues to warm, with the eight warmest years on record occurring since 1998. Even during this solar minimum.

So the planet seems to have warmed up a bit, so what, it'll cool again too. It's normal. The problem is that you arrogant liberals actually believe that we humans can control it. You really believe that if we just stop emitting so much co2 we will effect a change in the temperature of the Earth. What ever happened to the global cooling that was talked about by many of these same scientific geniuses back in the 1960's. I must have missed it. I do however remember that one cold winter we had when I was a kid, but then Summer came and we forgot all about it.

"That's simply a lie. The climate continues to warm, with the eight warmest years on record occurring since 1998. Even during this solar minimum."

my god man, how can you deny raw data? are you so blinded by the religion of global warming that you've completely missed all these headlines?

http://www.dailytech.com/Solar+Activity+Diminishes+Researchers+Predict+Another+Ice+Age/article10630.htm

"Observational data seems to support the claims -- or doesn't contradict it, at least. According to data from Britain's Met Office, the earth has cooled very slightly since 1998."

there's plenty more where this one came from. the data clearly shows a significant decrease in global temps.

stop being so biased and look at the facts.

gloabl warming is a hoax.

we aren't helping the matter, but it's not some out of control runaway train of global apocalypse that liberals claim. once we crest the peak in 2012 we will be slowly heading into a Maunder Minimum. it's the way the sun works. this isn't a fringe theory...it's accepted by all major scientific circles.

You can repeat it as often as you like. It's still wrong. Britain's Met Office simply leaves the entire Arctic Region out of it's data. This is important since this region is the fastest warming area on Earth.

The fact is, despite the solar minimum cycle the Earth continues to warm

pink_slip; What ever shall we do? I imagine you'll believe most anything you read as long as it comes from a known liberal source.

It's funny, but you'll get more people acting in the name of global warming, which can or can't really be proven as of yet, but yet you can't get people to budge on drug and/or alcohol abuse.

Shouldn't we also be concerned about wind erosion on the moon?

that's because the ones buying into the global warming bunk are the ones taking the drugs and alcohol..
