Ohio GOP voters being rejected for absentee ballots - The Blade refuses to report

http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2008/09/18/copy/ham_suit.ART_ART_09-18-08_B5_H4BC143.html?type=rss&cat=&sid=101

The Ohio AG issued a memo to local Boards of Elections to deny GOP absentee ballot requests because of an unchecked an unnecessary check-box on the application. This has resulted in thousands of GOP voters being rejected an absentee ballot. Every major paper in Ohio is reporting on this with the exception of The Blade. I wonder why..... There is now a lawsuit, and this will be overturned in all likliehood. However, the Blade's filtering of the news to move forward their position is disturbing.

A couple of things to note about that article:

- The improper ballots were printed by the McCain campaign.

- Brunner did not say that she would not accept the ballots in the end.

- Brunner has offered to contact all the parties with these ballots and give them an opportunity to correct their mistake.

- If and when it gets to the Ohio Supreme Court (7-0 Republican), the ballots will be accepted.

And does anyone else here see the irony of Republicans crying to "count all the votes"? This is child's play compared to 2004, when Republican Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, chairman of the Ohio Bush/Cheney re-election effort, did everything he could to suppress the Democratic vote, including purging voter rolls, intimidation, lack of voting machines and other registration/provisional ballot shenanigans. The effect of this voter fraud may have cost John Kerry the White House.

Ace,
The point is that The Blade made sure that each and every one of these stories was publicized. The Blade has yet to pen a single article on this subject. Why?

A lot of what went on in this state was preventing obvious attempts at voter fraud. If you remember, this is the state that Kerry supporters were caught buying votes with crack, and Cuyahoga county had more people registered to vote than people living in the county.

Lastly, if you found those attemts by Blackwell to be infringements on voters' rights then you need to be equally outraged this time around. Are you?

The point is that The Blade made sure that each and every one of these stories was publicized. The Blade has yet to pen a single article on this subject. Why?

They are a liberal paper. There, I said it. Folks like you and my dad need to come to grips with that fact rather than give yourself a heart attack every time you read the opinion page. Yeah, I know that they claim to be nonpartisan. So do a lot of papers. But accept the fact they are liberal and move on. If you want a paper that reinforces a conservative point of view, subscribe to the Col Dispatch or the Cinci Enq. Now if Republicans could admit that Fox is a conservative cable channel....

if you found those attemts by Blackwell to be infringements on voters' rights then you need to be equally outraged this time around. Are you?

I am always outraged when voter's rights are infringed. But I have not seen anything like voter fraud from this situation. And comparing Blackwell to Brunner is like apples to oranges.

What Blackwell did in 2004 was throw every possible obstacle in the way of Dems who wanted to vote. Brunner wrote a memo about absentee ballots, but offered to help do what she could to correct the mistake in the ballots. Don't be mad at Brunner, be mad at McCain for printing the ballots improperly. What happened to the party of personal responsibility?
