Toledo City Council rebuffs "change" by appointing Carty crony to the port authority

Jerry Chabler, member of the Thug Team?

Jerry Chabler has been a good political friend of Czarty Finkbeiner, and Chabler appears to be one of the Blade's puppets. Apparently, Pittsburgh wanted Chabler appointed to the board.

Toledo Free Press editor Michael Miller reported to WSPD Tuesday afternoon that Chabler politically threatened at least two members of council to approve his appointment. No story link yet to Miller's claim. Miller did say that people are afraid to go on record with this information.

Toledo City Council members voted 9-2 Tuesday afternoon to appoint Jerry Chabler to the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority. Mayor Carty Finkbeiner asked council to confirm the appointment of Mr. Chabler, 73, of Sylvania. Mr. Chabler was a critic of the agency when he served on it. In 2001, he was appointed by Mr. Finkbeiner to a full four-year term. He resigned from the port board in October, 2003.

Toledo City Council members Tuesday night approved a controversial mayoral appointment to the port authority board. By a 9-2 vote, council gave the OK to Mayor Carty Finkbeiner's choice, fellow Democrat and longtime political ally Jerry Chabler. Council members Tom Waniewski and Michael Ashford opposed the appointment -- Betty Schultz was absent. After being approved, Chabler urged the council to support the port authority's upcoming levy.

In 2001, [Chabler] was appointed by Mr. Finkbeiner to a full four-year term. Mr. Chabler resigned from the port board in October, 2003, nearly two years before the end of his four-year term. Mr. Chabler said at the time that he wanted to spend more time with his two daughters and seven grandchildren. Gov. Ted Strickland named Mr. Chabler to the Ohio State Racing Commission in April. Mr. Chabler also served on the Ohio State Lottery Commission and as executive director of the Ohio Employment Compensation Board under Gov. Richard Celeste in the 1980s and early 1990s. He was appointed to the Toledo Regional Board of Review by Gov. John Gilligan in 1973 and was reappointed by Mr. Gilligan's successor, Gov. James Rhodes, in 1979.

About the appointment process for the port authority :

Six of the port authority's 13 board members are appointed by the county commissioners, six are appointed by the city of Toledo, and one - the seat held by Vice Chairman G. Opie Rollison - is a joint city-county appointment. The county commissioners have three seats to fill.

Two of three Lucas County Commissioners, Gerken and Wozniak, are former members of Toledo City Council. The other commissioner, Konop, is a Toledo resident who is allegedly contemplating a run for mayor of Toledo next year. And last month, Konop said, "The fate of our region, in large part, depends on the future of downtown [Toledo]."

Should change the name to "Toledo County."

On his Now Toledo Web site, Konop correctly pointed out that : "The good 'ole boys network, with its circle the wagons mentality and resistance to change, is alive and well in our city's backrooms and boardrooms."

A big Carty ally on the port authority board is a strategic move for Carty because he knows he may have trouble getting re-elected mayor next year. Keith Wilkowski will run for mayor. A poll this spring indicated that Wilkowski crushes Finkbeiner in 2009. As mentioned above, Konop might jump in, and it sounds like Toledo City Councilman George Sarantou is thinking about a mayoral run.

Carty wants to stay in the "game," and he can do that by getting himself appointed to the Lucas County Port Authority. I think that's his backup plan in case his bid for a fourth term as tyrant of Toledo falls through. Carty was on the port board once before.

Feb 7, 2003 - Toledo Talk - Carty gets selected to board :

Lucas County commissioners yesterday unanimously appointed former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner to the board of directors of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, but not before Commissioner Maggie Thurber complained of 'external pressures exerted on this board' to appoint him.

I think Maggie said the external pressures came from Jerry Chabler who said Blade paper boy John Robinson Block wanted Carty appointed. And you better appoint Carty or else ...

Lucas County Democrat Teams - Jerry Chabler is listed on the B Team with people like Jack Wilson, Carty Finkbeiner, John Irish, Dominic Montalto, and Sandy Isenberg. Should rename it the "Thug Team."

June 19, 2003 - Toledo Talk - Does the Blade newspaper control Toledo? :

The Toledo Business Journal has a collection of articles, claiming the Blade has undermined growth projects in Toledo. "There has been a significant amount of effort expended by [Blade's editor-in-chief John Robinson] Block, with the cooperation of Port Authority board member Jerry Chabler, as part of this personal vendetta."

Im proud of my councilman Tom Waniewski for standing up.

Betty Schultz said she'd vote against Chabler if other people did. What's that all about? That statement, and the fact that she didnt show up for the vote is pure cowardice.
