Janney's

A TV commercial for Stihl chain saws aired recently lists Janney's Hardware as a retailer. If I'm not mistaken, Janney's (Secor & Alexis) went out of business months ago and their store has been razed.

I'm not too confident in saying this, but I believe their "small engines" store is still open. It used to be on Secor, just north of Alexis and on the east side of the street.

The small engine store is still open.

The small engine store actually has more than they used to have over there. They've done a little expanding and is still a great place for customer service.
I miss Janney's.

I miss Janneys. Also, I miss the Pharm and Food Town. I swear Rite Aid bought out the Pharm just because they didn't like the competition in prescriptions. I live near Monroe and Secor. I swear there are 4 Rite Aids within walking distance of each other right in that area. There are two by Monroe and Sylvania, One by the Westgate shopping center and one more....I can't remember.

Anyway, I miss the Pharm. It was soooo convenient.

I was only in Janneys a handful of times, but when I did have to go in there for something I was treated the way most people would like to be treated, getting that kind of customer service is almost extinct at Home Cheapo or Blowes.

At both stores you either can never find someone to help you or they are up your butt the whole time asking if you found everything. I personally like to be left alone when I'm shopping unless I need something and do not know where it is, or need to order something.

Don't even get me started on Rite Aid

Thanks for the update on Janney's.

As far as the drug/pharmacy chains of Rite-Aid and Walgreens go, I think both firms are trying to corner the local market.

Years ago there were other drug chains here. One was Rexall- in fact there was a Rexall Drugstore directly across Alexis from Janney's Hardware. What's there now? Well, you just drive by and see for yourself. Another Rexall was on Collingwood & Delaware, and I think there was one on Woodville & East Broadway.

Another small chain was Fairmont Pharmacy. One was on Dorr & Upton, another on Bancroft & Upton, and one at Devaux Village. Each had a lunch counter/soda fountain.

In its early days, the Franklin Park Mall had a Gray Drugs in it.

It is sad to see, for sure.

But everyone bitching about Janneys and Rexall going bye bye probably helped their demise by patronizing places like, oh, I don't know.............(in church lady voice) WALMART!?!?!?!?!?

And what about those who shopped at places like Meijer, Home Depot, and Lowe's, since those stores have been around longer here in Toledo than Wal-Mart?

I never knew Janneys sold leg of lamb, carpet or refrigerators, thanks for the heads up!

I thought Janney's was a hardware store? How in the hell would Wal-Mart be blamed for Janney's going out of business?

Hey Ryan, I see that a Janney's Ace Hardware used to exist at Secor & Alexis. Are you saying that you cannot buy hardware supplies at Home Depot and Lowe's? Even Meijer has a home and backyard department that probably sells some items that Janney's sold. Ditto for Target.

See Ryan, your hobby is blaming Wal-Mart and no one else.

Ryan's Mar 10, 2008 comment :

"I wonder how many businesses closed because a WalMart opened?"

To help relieve Ryan's narrow-minded view on the world, I asked on that same day :

"Wal-Mart? Why stop with only that store? How many small, local stores have closed over the years because of Kroger, Meijer, Lowe's, Home Depot, Target, Michaels, Office Max, Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, Pizza Hut, chain-after-chain ... ?"

Face it jr, it's all hype anyway. Walmart haters dont give two shits about the little guy - it's only the fact that Walmart isnt union that torques em off. If walmart went union you'd never hear another peep from anyone about 'the little guy.' Your list of other area big box stores who arent denigrated just goes to prove it.

And just to set the record straight, Janney's didnt close because of Walmart, just ask Tim Janney, he's still around. Janney's was run by two brothers - one ran the hardware part and the other ran the small engine part. One wanted to retire and the other didnt, and that's just exactly what happened, but hey, who said Prejudice ever let the facts get in the way.

I could care less if Wal-Mart is union or not.
What I resent, is that this HUGE retailer, raking in billions upon billions pays so little, (and offers little in the way of benefits) that a large portion of it's "full time" work force is eligible for public assistance. So in a way, they are government subsidized.
Plus, most of what they sell is crap made in overseas sweatshops.
I can't help but believe that if Sam Walton was still alive and running things they would be much different.

Jeepmaker, then do you feel the same way about Kmart and Target who do pay their employees the same way and sell the same overseas products?

Because I sure as hell dont see the issue being raised with them!!!

I still go to Ondrus Hardware just over the High Level Bridge on The East Side. They know what you're doing.
[To accomplish the left at the first light as you see them, go beyond and circle right - around the traffic triangle.]

And it's close to I75 if you know the secret.
