What can you do if you miss garbage day?

My wife and I have taken a couple days off, and in our excitement we forgot to put our garbage out on thursday. I've never had to find an alternative source, is there a dump/landfill around I can take my trash directly to?

Recycling is easy enough. Just go to the Lucas County web site, and look for the recycling areas (a lot of apartment complexes have them, also some Kroger stores). I guess the other stuff can be taken to the landfill, but I think you have to pay a fee for use of it. If we eventually get private collection we'll have to do these things anyways.

You can still put it out at the curb, just spray paint a political message on it so the trash police won't get you.

Seriously, if you really need to get rid of it, instead of dumping it on a deserted street, find a dumpster of a place you frequent. Dumping a couple bags of trash into the dumpster shouldn't get anyone upset, especially if you support the business or place you do it at.

My businesses have security cameras over the dumpsters. We take every step to re-patriate foreign trash to it's original owner. We sort through it looking for names or other identifyers. We file police reports if the persons identified don't come and retrieve their "property". You'd be surprised at the crap people think it is OK for them to dispose of at someone elses expense. Besides the everday stuff I've had deer guts, road kill, dead dogs, and heaps of fish heads and entrails and one filthy broken toilet. I've made it a personal mission in life to make sure I make the illegal dumpers life just as miserable as I can.

You might find a business that your frequent that might allow you to use their dumpster IF you ask. Like Holland said, it's a misdemeanor - 'theft of service', I think it's called.

Other than that, Hoffman Rd. landfill by Jeep will take it for a small price.

(And honestly Holland, I'd let 'em do the roadkills. I see it as someone doing 'civic duty' by getting a potentially dangerous object out of the road)

Thanks folks - I looked up the Hoffman landfill at http://www.ci.toledo.oh.us/Departments/PublicService/DivisionofSolidWaste/HoffmanLandfill/tabid/323/Default.aspx

Wow - what prices!

Fees:
$16 per cubic yard (minimum charge - one cubic yard)
$10 white goods (non-freon)
$3 automobile tire
$10 truck tire
$30 large truck or tractor tire

BUT, the damn place is only open 8-2pm M-F, so that shoots that idea.

As far as asking a business to use their dumpster, Im gonna pass. Small businesses will generally keep as small a dumpster as they can to serve their needs.

As far as Birdy's recycling info, that's obvious - I use Kroger. This would be the non-recyclable garbage, ie foodstuffs and such.

The statement "If we eventually get private collection we'll have to do these things anyways." Is untrue. I live in Ohio north of Alexis, so Im very familiar with the service my bedford neighbors have, and it's enviable.

Im going to call the BFI-Vienna Junction Landfill later on and see if anyone's workiing today, and if so, I'll take my stuff out there, and after that, learn from my mistake - we just took off Wednesday night, and in our excitement we just plumb forgot.

My suggestion for a road kill is a shovel and a deep hole - Not to smell and rot in the heat waiting for the next pickup. The flies and the odors are horrific. It's not fair to the employees who have to keep the area clean and dump our own trash. It's not good for businees to have the smell of carrion wafting through the parking lot.

Security cameras on a dumpster. That's precious.
Can't you just get the ones that lock shut?

I'm not talking about dumping a garbage truck load into your dumpster, nor do I think people should be using it on a regular basis. Sorry people have abused your property like that.

My wife's grandmother owns a cottage up in the Hillsdale area. One corner of the lake it sits on is undeveloped because it's very low and tends to flood. That being said, it's also very beautiful with a stream running thru it and what not. It's a wonderful place to take a canoe.

One day a neighbor was complaining because someone dumped a bunch of trash back there. I asked if she'd poked thru it because there might be buried treasure. She looked at me like I was teasing her, but then I explained that I meant buried treasure might be an old envelope with an address on it that would lead back to the dumper...

She broke into a huge grin and ran back to the woods to go look. It made her day when yes indeed, she did find 'buried treasure', and nabbed the bastards!

Fun story to tell, but Im on line with Holland in this issue. My problem is my own doing, and Im sure many people have made the same mistake I have. I intend to tightly bag up everything in heavy duty lawn and leaf bags (maybe even double them up,and I'll just put them around back of the house and we'll wait till next thursday. We'll live.

The security cameras were initially installed so that a robber couldn't jump out from behind the dumpster and grab an employee by surprise and gain entrance. The employess are trained to look at the monitor first before going out the back door door. It's a safety issue that had an unexpected payoff.

The best story I ever got was about three bags of ordinary household trash thrown in over a weekend. Donning the rubber gloves we easily found personal identifyers. All were from the same household. The response to the phone call notification was protestation. "Couldn't have been my trash!" We described the car in the security footage and the doctor bills with name and address. "Oh. Well, I guess the maid must have done it". That's the only trash that was retrieved in a BMW.

Yeah, what Toledo Latina said. How much trash do you possibly have that it can't wait a week?
