Distinctly toledo foods?

other than something like tony packos, which you really can't get outside of the region,
what other restaurants or types of food do you find distinctly toledo?

if the food network were doing a toledo feature, what do you think they would talk about?

I think a great untapped resource is found in the Indian and Med type foods. The spices and quality of food are generally better than the chinese grown crap we eat. The Indian food has some spices that are really good for you, and places like the Toledo Market have very authentic Med foods at reasonable prices. You can buy Greek Oregano on the stick, bulk green tea, a wide selection of olive oil by the gallon(nearly) and an Indian food section. Also a place to sit down and enjoy the chefs daily feast toward the back of the store. There are a lots and lots of foods there that are hard to find.

Ive heard that people outside toledo have never heard of chili-mac

prime3end is correct. toledo has been very fortunate to have had lebanese (sp?) and greek restaurants for such a long time. while we are accustomed to hummous and grape leaves etc., many larger and more "cosmopolitan" communities don't have the diversity (food and otherwise) we have here.

Yea, I have a friend that moved from Toledo to Dayton and they are always complaining about not having any decent Med restaurants. I found that odd. Beirut is my favorite local place.

Frogs? Was at Kroger's a while back and noticed the meat area had frogs legs. I asked the guy if they sold well and was surprised to find out they do.

Also Muskrat seems to be a local. Not my thing though as it's to bony; but I did try it.

Frogs,

..but think of all those poor double amputee frogs rolling around on their little carts. Hard to catch flies like that.

ive had frogs outside of the toledo area.. but they do seem to appear around here more than anywhere else. and good call on the lebanese & greek options we have.

i think what im really looking for though.. is foods specific to toledo. i wonder if there are any dishes we can claim as having originated here? chili mac is big in cincinatti too, but outside of ohio im not sure...

Fried perch. Best at Webber's.

You say Toledo specific, but it extends into Michigan up to Monroe. Either from people visiting Toledo, people from Toledo moving into Michigan, or just because its close to Toledo. Im sure the people in Perrysburg, Sylvania, Oregon also think the same. I would call it a Toledo regional thing.

Oh and it used to be said the best frog legs were at the Frog Leg Inn in Erie Michigan of all places.

Do any of you remember the chili-mac parlor that was downtown on Erie Street near Madison?

posted by flinty on Oct 06, 2008 at 12:30:17 pm     #

Yes! Best EVER! Wasn't it across the street from the Wagon Wheel? Or around the block from Grace Smith's?.

I am in no way, shape, or form a fan of chili mac. But, I do believe I heard that the recipe for that mac went to the place in Sylvania in the Mayberry strip.

One thing I always have when I'm home: Rudys Hot dogs and fried mushrooms. Nothing like them here in Maryland.

Lots of people have made some great recommendations, but from a non-Ohio where are these places? :)

Address please, I want to line up a queue.

Absolute BEST pie in the area, hands down, is Schmuckers on Reynolds between Bancroft and Dorr! If you like coconut cream pie, you HAVE to try theirs! Hubby and I love to go in there once in a while just to get away! We each get a different type of pie and share w/each other!
