University of Toledo football coach Tom Amstutz plans to step down from his position on Monday, The Blade has learned.
Amstutz and UT athletic director Mike O'Brien are scheduled to announce at a morning news conference that Amstutz will be reassigned to a different job within the university, not necessarily the athletic department, at the conclusion of the season.
Amstutz, 53, is 57-38 in his eight-year career with the Rockets that includes two Mid-American Conference championships. But the Rockets are 2-6 this season. UT is 0-4 at the Glass Bowl this year and is heading toward its third straight losing season.
--------
Really strange to do this 2 days before a game. Wonder who's taking over interim?
I would assume that Amstutz will command the team until the end of the season. Since it says he will be assigned to a difference job "at the conclusion of the season".
Its not completely unusual to have a lame duck coach finish out an unsalvageable season. (Like John L. Smith a few years ago at MSU, as one example off the top of my head.)
