ESPN and the Points Shaving Scandal

ESPN did a whole expose on the Scooter McDougle scandal. Gradkowski's name is mentioned, as is Keith Triplett (though very briefly), and a list of some of the games in question is in the report.

It's a long read, but an important one. Click clack.

I'm surprised this story has resurfaced, or maybe it has not never gone away. I guess I haven't paid close attention to UT's alleged point-shaving scheme because I thought this story fizzled out a while ago.

Mar 30, 2007 Toledo Talk thread about the possible point-shaving.

This Aug 29, 2007 ESPN story was produced by Mike Fish and George J. Tanber.

A "George Tanber" used to write for the Toledo Blade.

Past Toledo Talk threads related to the Blade's Tanber:

May 24, 2006 Blade Writer George Tanber Admits Infamous Pulitzer Letter

Editor and Publisher broke a story this afternoon about longtime Toledo Blade reporter George Tanber, who apparently admitted writing the infamous eight-page letter to the Pulitzer committee detailing the reasons why the Blade series on Coingate was "tainted."

Aug 3, 2006 'Toledo Guild Won't Arbitrate Fired 'Blade' Reporter's Case'

Tanber, a 14-year Blade veteran, was fired May 26, two days after he admitted writing the Pulitzer letter. [T]he Blade indicated he was fired for "dishonesty, inappropriate behavior, and outside actions that violated his employment."

[Tanber's] anonymous letter, an eight-page document dated March 28, was titled "Deception and Coverup Taint Award-Winning Coingate Series." It claimed, among other things, that the Blade was aware of alleged illegal campaign contributions by GOP fund-raiser Tom Noe prior to the 2004 presidential election."

Good catch, I glazed right over the byline.

jr, thanks for including that. i learned something new and disturbing yet almost not really a surprise.

as far as this case goes, it sounds long winded and sloppy. ut's prez think it might involve other schools under the same scenario.

you can go all over the area and see mike hart missed games, drew stanton, omar jacobs missed a few games his last year me thinks, lloyd carr missed a few games as usual.

and then ohio state didn't even make it to arizona last january.

people who gamble seemed to be obsessed/possessed. it seems more boring than church and fantasy football combined.

That piece of garbage referenced unnamed sources 17 times. Unacceptable for journalism, perfect for rumor-mongering.

The lazy journalism award goes to channel 13 for running someone else's shoddy work at the top of their newscast. Did they really think there was anything new in this story?
