Next ReUrbanism meeting is Aug 30

(Sorry for the short notice.)

From my notes taken at the February 2007 meeting:

Buy local

BALLE

---- end Feb 2007 notes ----

Frogtown Dollars

What about the funky idea of using Frogtown Dollars to help support the 'buy local' concept?

Didn't JFK do this?
http://www.john-f-kennedy.net/thefederalreserve.htm

This idea is Keynesian and since Keynes was critical of free markets in his effort to save capitalism, most business loving/democracy hating types seem to despise this sort of thing.

Or actually is could be Gesell(ian), an infulence on Keynes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silvio_Gesell#Opinions

Gesell was an ethical vegetarian. He considered himself a world citizen and believed Earth should belong to all people, regardless of race, gender, class, wealth, religion and age and that borders should be made obsolete.

Gesell founded his economic thoughts on the self-interest of people as a natural, healthy motive to act, which allows the individual to follow the satisfaction of his/her needs and to be productive. The economic system must do justice to this pre-condition, otherwise this system would undoubtedly fail. This is why, Gesell called his proposed economic system "natural". This stance put him in a clear opposition to Karl Marx, who called for a change in the social conditions.

Taking selfishness into account, Gesell called for free, fair business competition with equal chances for all. This included the removal of all legal and inherited privileges. Everyone should rely only on his personal abilities in order to make a living. In the "natural economic order", which he aimed for, the most talented people would have the highest income, without forgery by interest and rent charge. The economic status of the less talented would also improve, because they wouldn't be forced to pay interest and rent charge. According to Gesell, this would lead to an equalization between the poor and the rich. Further, there would be more means available to help the poor, because the higher average income would mean that everyone would have enough money to spare what is necessary to help.

"Toledo(,) choose local" sounds like uninspired group think.

No need to reinvent the wheel.

Just copy 'n paste like serious academic <strike>plagiarism</strike> research. (hopefully my sense of humor translates, probably not)

http://www.thinklocalportland.org/

A simple slogan, educate the community on its benefits, sponsor some community events, have a small business sidewalk sale inside the Seagate Center or somewhere to get people to know what's really out there.

Make a map of all the small businesses who choose to participate. Didn't they used to make those charicature maps for cities at one time. I think I saw one for Pburg and might have seen one for Toledo a while ago.

I think the public sympathy is there. It just needs to be tapped.

more research.

charlatan, it's all the same thing.

http://www.thinklocalportland.org is a project of http://www.sbnportland.org, which is part of BALLE, which is located at http://www.livingeconomies.org, which Toledo is now a part of, which means Toledo's BALLE network can tap into the experiences of the Portland group and the other networks.

Toledo's newly formed BALLE network is the first one in Ohio. The kickoff party is Thursday evening, Septemper 27 at Diva's restaurant.

Go to the BALLE Web site (livingeconomies.org) and mouse over the Networks tab and select Find a Network and you will see the site for Portland. The Ann Arbor BALLE site is http://www.thinklocalfirst.net. Toledo's group does not yet have the funds to support a BALLE Web presence, so on the networks page, it says:

  • Toledo - NEW!

The BALLE Web site http://www.livingeconomies.org needs a little correcting because if you click the networks tab, Toledo does not show up. But when you select "Find a Network" Toledo appears, but the Ann Arbor site is listed under Georgia.

Granted I'm quite glib on the subject, but the sign needs a touch-up to say the least.

I just added the other stuff to add something besides not approving of something.* Didn't want to come across as shitty, because I'm not sure how exactly sensitive people are to the project.

It sounds like a smart, inspiring, encompassing idea... just hope the energy is there.

I'm checking the tabs under economic development including results and it says coming soon.

I hope it has green results and not blue ribbons.

Why doesn't Balle just issue it's own continent-wide currency? Get the ball rolling itself.

*as if my approval matters.

Don't you mean to get the "Balle" rolling? (lol)!

anyone know who designed that poster?

I think a Metroparks employee designed it.

After this evening's meeting, I think the new Toledo BALLE group holds a kickoff event at Diva's.

jr - are they the same orgs? or is the reurbanism an initiative of BALLE?

BALLE groups exist across the country. Toledo's new BALLE group is the first one in Ohio. Business owners pay a fee to become a member. Once Toledo's group gets a Web presence on the LivingEconomies.org network, more info will be available. Or a person could visit Diva's tonight after 7:00 p.m.

Here's the Web site for Ann Arbor's BALLE: http://www.thinklocalfirst.net. I think BALLE is partly a way for small, locally-owned businesses to network with others across the country and share ideas and educate the public on how much money remains locally when buying from a locally-owned business.

The ReUrbanism meetings have been occurring for more than two years. It's simply an informal gathering of business people, developers, activists, curious observers, and the occasional elected official. At each meeting, one or two people or orgs give a presentation. The focus is mainly with the downtown area of Toledo, but it's not always that way.

At tonight's meeting, I believe someone from the Metroparks will be talking about the new park that will open one day along the river near downtown. The Metroparks plans to seek public input on this new park.

thanks, jr...I knew about BALLE, but wasn't sure about any relationship with the ReUrbanism gatherings. Looking forward to your notes if you're able to go...

I lost a day somewhere. I thought tomorrow was Thursday, so I missed this evening's ReUrbanism meeting. The two scheduled speakers were :

  • Dr. Katerina Ruedi Ray, Director, School of Art, Bowling Green State University - on the economic impact of the creative arts in NW Ohio
  • James K. Gee, General Manager, TARTA - with an update on mass transit for the Toledo area and the implications of the upcoming vote
