Mighty Michigan Defeated by I-AA Appalachian State

Ugh. I am sick to my stomach. It's one thing when your team loses a game, especially a close game, but it quite another when your fifth-ranked, BCS-sniffing football team loses its opener to a Division I-AA school.

More on my blog about the shocking victory by Appalachian State over Michigan.

Congrats, though, to the Mountaineers, doing what no I-AA school has ever done.

I must admit that I'm surprised - I really thought they would pull it out in the end.

But, I can't say there was much disappointment in our house about the loss either (I'm an MSU grad, and hubby Notre Dame).

That kid who blocked the field goal is going to be a living legend at his campus. lol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachian_State_University

In 2001, Appalachian was recognized by TIME Magazine as a College of the Year.3

Appalachian is included in the 2008 edition of The Princeton Review's "America's Best Value Colleges".2

The "most storied football program" was beaten by a school that up until 1965 was merely a "Teacher's College." And only became part of the UNC system in '72.

As I mentioned in another thread, App St has won the national championship the past two years for Division 1-AA, and even the Detroit Free Press said this morning:

... the Mountaineers may be a tougher opponent than fans expect when they visit Michigan today for a noon kickoff.

Still, I wouldn't have thought App St would win, but I love it. One of my brothers coaches football for a Division 1-AA school that has made the playoffs (yeah, they have playoffs) the past four years or so, and a couple years ago they were defeated in the second round by App St, So I'm guessing this App St victory pleases all of those at the little schools. Awesome.

And it sounds like it was an exciting ending.

Julian Rauch kicked a 24-yard field goal with 26 seconds left to put the Mountaineers ahead of the Wolverines and Corey Lynch blocked a field goal in the final seconds to seal a jaw-dropping upset that may have no equal.

I wish the video of the App St-Mich game would be for sale on iTunes. The best game I think I've ever seen, especially the ending, had to be last season's Fiesta Bowl where Boise St defeated Oklahoma. I bought that game from iTunes for a few bucks. One option I downloaded contains only the plays and none of that dead time between snaps. That means you can watch the entire game in around half an hour. I just can't sit still for 3+ hours anymore to watch football, especially when it's nice outside. For a game like App St vs Mich, I'd pay five bucks for the plays only.

I was going to leave for work at about 3:30. I simply couldn't. It was absolutely amazing. TWO blocked field goals, are you kidding me?

Now I'm just crossing my fingers that UT can come back from this hole against Purdue.

I would only pay for the App St plays since Michigan didn't do s**t apart from Mike Hart.

Being a Michigan fan, I can only hope this accelerates Lloyd Carr-ty Finkbeiner's exit.

Because it's true...

Great job to App State...definitely a huge accomplishment. It also shows that rankings mean absolutely nothing this early in the season. A lot of people say they should hold off until the first month of games are player or until conference play is underway - probably not a bad idea.

As far as your hometown teams...

Toledo couldn't hold on. Personally I think it is time for a coaching change there. UT could easily jump out of the MAC into the Big East if they could get their program rolling.

BGSU beat Minnesota in overtime. Congrats to them. Good win for them and hopefully many more. BGSU use to put fear in the "big schools" with their air attack - it needs to come back. They are another school that could easily make the jump out of the MAC.

As far as me...the good ol' boys took care of business on North Texas and got a lot of the players some time in the game - especially the 3 new QBs. 79-10. Can't complain much about that. Miami-FL next week...should be fun. :)

I don't think so. We don't have cable nor satellite TV, only rabbit ears. We only use our TV to watch DVDs. So yesterday evening, instead of watching football or whatever, I watched Glengarry Glen Ross and Crash, a couple of $3.99 DVDs we bought the day before at Best Buy. BTW, of those two movies, Glengarry is a much better movie, but I've seen it before and I've read the play, so that could affect the results of my analysis.

"I wouldn't even keep Michigan in my Top 25 after this. (Wait: Can I put a 1-AA team on my Top 25 ballot? Why not? A win at the No. 5-ranked team is a win at the No. 5-ranked team. For this week, at least, Appy State deserves the placement.)

Meanwhile, Michigan's season is over. Finished. Done. Kaput. At least in terms of being considered a national contender. O-V-E-R."

"One of the greatest upsets in sports history."

YouTube has some video of the game. Here's the final minute or so with the announcers. Man, two blocked fields goals by App St in the final two minutes.

I didn't realize how the end of the game played out until now. Michigan did almost pull that game out of their ass thanks to App St. The Mountaineers had first and goal on the Michigan five yard line with only 30 seconds left, and App St chose to kick the field goal on first down. They could have taken a knee, lined up, let the clock run down some, and then spiked the ball to stop the clock. They left enough time for Michigan to throw a bomb and get into decent field goal position.

And here's a nice five minute segment of the game's highlights from some sports show.

I think this grainy, end-of-game video contains the audio of the App St radio announcers.

Interview with App St head coach on the field after the game. Volume is lame.

Now it gets interesting at YouTube. Warning: Disturbing video follows if you're a Michigan fan.

Here's another video of the end-of-game highlights with a cool tune. I'm guessing this vid was put together by either a Ohio State or Michigan State fan. The looks on the faces of the Michigan fans is excellent.

Video of Penn State fans celebrating the App St win. I've been to State College for a game. That's a beautiful area. If I lived there, I could think of other things to do on a Saturday afternoon than watch Michigan on TV. Obviously, the crowd in this student center or whatever must have grown as word spread around campus that the game was close. Multiple videos exist at YouTube of Penn State fans celebrating the App St victory. Michigan plays Penn State in Ann Arbor on Sep 22.

This one is titled "Buckeye fans in DC watch Michigan lose to Appalachian State."

And so on ...

Michigan was ranked #5 Saturday morning, and now they are not in the top 25.

Michigan takes historic tumble in the polls

Since the AP poll expanded to 25 teams in 1989, no team has taken a bigger tumble in one week. Michigan also fell from No. 5 to out of the USA Today coaches' Top 25.

The bright side for Michigan fans in all of this is their team was a part of history. (And Ann Arbor is still a cool town.)

App State fans after the Michigan game when the Mountaineers returned home that night.

A better version of the radio call.

Who needs cable or satellite TV when we've got YouTube?

A couple newspapers that serve the Boone, NC area:

From the Watauga:

They torn down the goal post at App St.

"Despite the game being away, Appalachian State fans upended the goalpost from Kidd Brwer Staidum Saturday and parade it through town."

OK - I think that this can be characterized as the greatest upset in college football history - but in sport's history?

Was this upset bigger than when the US beat USSR in the Olympics?

Was this upset bigger than when the U.S. lost the America's cup, ending the longest winning streak in sports history?

I'm sure that those who are more sports focused than me can come up with other examples...

Because they deserve it, and because as a UM fan I am willing to take it as well as dish it out:

From ESPN.com:

WOLVERINE WOES
– Thomas Neumann

With Appalachian State's stunning win at Michigan still keeping the college football world abuzz, Page 2 compiles the 10 most humbling losses in Wolverines history:

1. Appalachian State 34, Michigan 32 (Sept. 1, 2007): No loss to Ohio State packs this kind of shock value.

2. Ohio State 50, Michigan 14 (Nov. 23, 1968): Buckeyes coach Woody Hayes said he went for a two-point conversion on the final touchdown "because I couldn't go for three."

3. Any loss to Michigan State.

4. Ohio State 12, Michigan 10 (Nov. 23, 1974) and Ohio State 14, Michigan 11 (Nov. 25, 1972). These two losses in Columbus cost the Wolverines perfect seasons, not to mention the 10-10 tie in Ann Arbor in 1973.

5. Half of the 1984 season: losses to Washington, Michigan State, Iowa, Purdue, Ohio State and Brigham Young made for a very un-Schembechler-like 6-6 campaign.

6. Tennessee 45, Michigan 17 (Jan. 1, 2002): Casey Clausen threw for 393 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores in the Citrus Bowl.

7. Southfield Police Department 1, Gary Moeller 0.33 (April 28, 1995): Supper turned into singing after a few cocktails. Then Moeller challenged a restaurant manager to a fight and punched an officer in the chest. Six days later, Moeller resigned as head coach.

8. The entire 1934 and '36 seasons: The Wolverines went 1-7 in each season under coach Harry Kipke, but at least they didn't lead "SportsCenter."

9. Northwestern 54, Michigan 51 (Nov. 4, 2000): "I thought they would score, coming into the game. But I saw them almost scoring at will," U-M coach Lloyd Carr said afterward.

10. Colorado 27, Michigan 26 (Sept. 24, 1994): A one-point loss to the No. 7 team in the nation is no embarrassment, but having to watch the Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook replay to this day is humbling. (Aside: I was at this game. Not a good ride home.)

How about in 1952: Cornell 20, Michigan 7. It may have been Michigan's only loss that year.

On ESPN messboards, Michie fans were bearing the brunt of the mockery.

Some Michigan fan was quoting all their records and then someone brought up their current losing streak to D2 teams.

Appalachian State was called overrated for putting cupcakes like Michigan in their gear-up for another D2 championship.
...
If you watched the entire game, Appalachian State dropped a wide open TD pass, missed a FG by inches, had a turnover reviewed and overturned in Michigan's favor, had a few questionable penalties...
...
Appalachian State could have beat them by 2 scores, easily. They probably could have beat anyone outside the Top 10.

The miracle on ice was probably more folklore and prejudiced by that cold war thingie, the US had legit pros on that team...http://espn.go.com/classic/s/miracle_ice_1980.html

Sailing is technology driven, especially in the America's Cup, a faster hull rating usually wins (amirite?).

In just about every context, this might be the greatest upset of all time, and the Big10 network was there to make sure few people saw it.

I hope someone picks up some Appalachian games....
