Is TPS Spreading Out?

I went to vote at the Boys and Girls Club at the Aurora L. Gonzalez Center off of South Avenue (near the fire station there) about noon. As I went into the gymnasium two young girls (one maybe 8 and one maybe 10 or 11) at a table asked me if I wanted to buy some chocolate "buckeyes". I said after I come out.

I voted, and as I came out I stopped and bought a couple of plastic packages (3 buckeyes/$1.00). I asked them if they had gotten out of school, and they pointed across the hall-way to a room. In the room I saw about a dozen kids (in my view) who were spread out with maybe a desk between each kid. I asked if they were in a "charter school", and they looked confused, and said they were in a school. Their teacher (a rather good-looking young man) came out, probably to check on a middle-aged man talking to his students. I asked him if it was a "charter school", and he said it was a TPS school for kids with behavior problems. I then asked him if they were doing well, and he said that they were having "some success". Most of the kids seemed to be girls (there may have been a boy or two). I didn't go in the class-room so I didn't see all the kids. Anyone know anything about this? What school are these kids connected to. I know most of the kids in the area now go to Marshall, and I think there is another school on Broadway across from Danny Thomas Park. How many kids are in a class-room now? It seemed like there were only a dozen kids in the class-room from where I stood.

How does being let out of class to sell buckeyes teach kids to control their behavior?

This program has been there for a few years, possibly five years. I believe the students were children that were suspended from school for behavioral problems. Some of the children are bussed in, so possibly the come from different schools. I don't recall much more about it. But I have known of its existence.

Selling Buckeyes wouldn't be any different than kids at a regular school selling cookies. It's a fundraiser. They probably learned to make, package and sell money. All dealing with math. So they could have learned measuring, counting buckeyes and counting,adding/subtracting monies.

These kids seemed quite nice. I wonder what the schools consider "behavior problems". They weren't impolite, or pushy. Maybe the problem is between the kids and that is why they were spread out across the class-room. There was 3-4 feet between chairs, or so it seemed.

You know if there was ever a need for parents to help teachers in the class-room you would think it would be for these kids. The guy seemed to be alone. I wonder if the school encourages parents to help in schools when they have problem children like these?

Ok, I'll bite. How many kids were in the class? Were the kids behaving themselves, or were they tearing around like wild Indians? What was the predominate race and age?

I say a dozen, and they all seemed to be in their chair. They seemed a mixture of ethnic groups, and anywhere from 7 to 11, I think. The teacher seemed to be standing behind them, and moving toward the middle of the group. He seemed to be trying to engage them in what he was trying to teach.

Thanks. Here's my point: These are supposed to be discipline problems too tough for a normal classroom. Several are outside the classroom hawking candy and the rest are doing a fairly good job of behaving themselves in class.

Unless the kids are there for some other reason, this scenario kind of makes me wonder who is out of step - the kids or the school.
