Looking for a High School for a Child with A.S.D

My son 14 year old son has Autism Spectrum Disorder. He functions well, but has some social problems with kids his own age(adults and younger children he can relate with). He has a speech impediment and learning disorder. He is working at a lower grade level but bringing good grades. He also has what TPS would consider a Behavioral Problem. When actually its and over stimulation to a disarray in the classroom, screaming kids in the lunchroom or 72 kids on a bus all talking at once. This has cause him to act out/misbehave(never harming anyone just squawking, talking and jumping around).

When he was in second grade, the principal at Marshall, his teacher and the psychiatric doctor that evaluated him, wanted to move him to a behavioral school with only 2 weeks left in the school year. I worked hard and did everything I could to get his medicine's regulated. I helped them by following their rules but when it came best for my child they wanted to ship him somewhere he didn't need to be. I tried to tell them there was more to my son than just ADHD. There were other issues. The tested him and found him just above the mark to be consider mentally retarded. I searched and searched with doctors and the internet to have him finally diagnosed, at the end of the last school year, having Autism Spectrum Disorder(A.S.D)

So he is now happily in a charter school, and has been there since that day they were going to move him to another school. Behavior was/is not an issue with him. I learned what was over stimulating him and we(school/bus driver and myself) worked on it with him. Giving him a quite area to move to when he is being bothered, listening to cds on the bus ect.

I have such bad emotions over TPS and yet his freshman year is coming up with me have no where to place him but TPS. I am hoping someone may know of any schools (besides online schools as he needs the socialization) that would be good for a child with A.S.D.? I have checked out the Autism school near St V's in the old St Mary's but I don't think that school is for him. I currently live in the Waite district and this seems to be my only option.

Have you tried or heard about Summit Academy? Or is that the one you're talking about that is by St. V's? I know a few people that work with some of the kids that go there and they have pretty good things to say about it.

I am looking for high school. I do not believe Summit Academy has high school. But thank you for your post.

No, they do have a high school! I know for a fact that they go all the way through 12th grade! The Middle and High schools are in an old school building over on Martha Street, I believe.

Here's the contact info that I found:

I have an appointment to visit the school on Monday. I only see one problem at the moment, transportation. I am not able to drive him to and from school every day from East Toledo to Phillips Ave. They no longer offer bus service due to cost. And I do not feel that he could safely take a Tarta bus on his own.

Well, my son went there a few years ago, and we lived WAAAAAAAAAY out in the country and they picked him up and dropped him off by bus every day. Not their own buses, but LSESC buses. I'm not sure if they still do that, but they probably do. Crossing my fingers and wishing you luck! If he gets in, I think you'll like the school! They are amazing with their communication with the parents and the teachers that I dealt with back them were awesome!

Lucas County will stop providing bus service to all charter schools starting next school year. Toledo Public will not provide busing. This makes it tough for a lot of families who rely on busing from other areas of the city. I think this would make charter schools more of a neighborhood school than one you can select because of what they provide best for your child. I will have to check with MRDD, since he is eligible for help with transportation. Crossing fingers.

Oh wow, I didn't know that!! That's really going to cause problems for some that rely on the transportation! I hope that you can get something figured out transportation wise for your son when you do find the right school for him! Keep me posted if you can!
