I was wondering if you all could give me some tips as to where I could get a good, but inexpensive Christmas Tree in the area? We've never had a real tree before, so I'm totally clueless as to how or where to buy one. I know about the tree farm out in Whitehouse, but they're a little pricier than my budget can afford right now. I'm not looking for a huge tree, just one that looks decent and won't die in a few days time. Thanks in advance for any help!

holly - there are lots of Christmas tree farms in the southern michigan area. We've gotten ours from Bliss Tree Farm several times.
Our issue is that I really like a Blue Spruce and they're sometimes hard to find. I like them because the needles hold up well and they have very strong branches that can hold some of my larger/heavier ornaments. I also like how they smell. But be forewarned - they're usually more expensive than other types of trees and heavy gloves are a must - the needles are not only strong, but very sharp!
Also, remember to get a tree bag ahead of time and put it under the tree BEFORE you put it up. We just put a whole in the bottom of the bag for the trunk and then gather it around the bottom of the tree and cover it up with the tree skirt. It makes it so much easier to remove the tree after Christmas.
You can also go the National Christmas Tree Association website and enter your zip code to find trees. They also have a 'find a tree recycler' search as well.

ps. JR is right about the size - take a tape measurer or something similar. We just use our arm extended straight up to ensure we get the right size. In the old house which had a vaulted ceiling, we used the windshield scraper - LOL!

Theres a guy selling them on the corner or Hallet and Airport Hwy in Swanton. 20.00 and up so the sign says.
I don't know the name of it, but go to the church right on the corner of Harvest and Laskey.
TOMORROW (12-08) they are GIVING trees away FREE.
This is a community outreach thing they're doing since they're relatively new to the neighborhood - no strings attached, they just want folks to come say hi and if you need a tree, have one for free while supplies last. They have done this for three years now.
If all else fails, you can buy from this guy. (Warning: Strong Language)

If you want a disposabble tree, try this. You can dump it in my front yard when you're done with it. Just don't scratch the appliances or my workout bench. Gotta get buff for the yearzies.
As embarrassed as I am to admit it, our finances are very tight right now. So we headed over to the church that Billy mentioned would be giving trees away today. By the time we got there, about 15 trees were left out of 400 that they were giving away. We just put our tree in the stand, OMG, it's GORGEOUS! It's between 6 and 7 foot tall, it's narrow at the bottom, which is perfect for our living room, it's shape is just gorgeous! I'll let it sit for 24 hours before I decorate it, when I have it done I'll post a picture so you can see!
Billy, I am SOOOOOO grateful to you for letting me know about this, thank you from the bottom of my heart! I'm also thankful to all of you for your suggestions! And Charlatan, well, I don't particularly care for that tree, but if I do ever get one I'll be sure to dump it in your front yard when I'm done with it...LOL!

Holly, don't be embarressed, many of us are in the same boat. With me, it's due to truck repair (water pump). Perfect timing-ugh.

We used to cut our own trees at North Branch Nursery in Pemberville, but I don't think they offer Christmas trees anymore.
The Fraser Fir is more expensive, but man, it holds up so well. The needles are soft, and the tree smells nice. In my opinion, it's worth the expense if you plan to have your tree up for a month or more.
If you cut your own tree out in the field, get one smaller than the one you initially select. A tree looks small outside in a field, but when you bring it indoors, it seems the tree grew in size during the ride home.
