Toledo Talk

Les Miles and the University of Michigan

I don't care how many LSU contracts Les Miles signs or how many press conferences he holds where he says he's not going to Michigan, until the Wolverines hire a new football coach, I believe Miles is still vying for the Michigan job. Big time college football coaches are a lot like politicians. Big bullshitters with big egos.

Postings in the local blogosphere about 'Michigan Miles' or 'Les is More' :

Elsewhere :

They talked on the phone! Miles is a Michigan alum. He's going to take the call. That doesn't mean he's a candidate again. Before Miles' statement later Tuesday that said he was talking to Michigan about other candidates, I told a national reporter that could be one of the things they were talking about.

Apparently, the University of Michigan does not have enough people on campus nor enough alumni around the country who can help the Wolverines find a new coach.

Dec 6, 2007 AP story :

LSU head football coach Les Miles signed a contract extension to keep him at the university through 2012. The contract doesn't change Miles' salary. An SEC championship win requires Miles' salary to be at least the third highest in the conference.

If LSU wins the national championship, the contract provides Miles would become among the nation's top-earning college football coaches. University officials estimate that would put his annual earnings somewhere between $3.2 million and $3.5 million.

Also remaining unchanged is the $1.25 million penalty Miles must pay to LSU if he leaves for Michigan, a contract clause that college football fans became well acquainted with after Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr announced his retirement in November.

He's probably like the 3rd best coach in the SEC behind Tuberville and Richt. With Pelini on his staff, he wasn't even the best coach on his own team.

People at OSU in Stillwater note his sloppy recruiting and soft discipline and confusion on the sideline.

If Michigan is stuck on inbreeding (which shows a lack of commitment to winning, but they did win a lot last century especially when football was a club sport)at least consider Harbaugh. Guess where he's from? And if he passed Stanford's sifters on integrity he can't be that bad.

Miles will be another great coach for Ohio State. Even this year he was 3 plays away from having 5 losses. He even lost Joe McKnight in his own backyard recruiting-wise.

Didn't he leave OSU after denying LSU's interest all along?

Less during the 4th quarter of the Arkansas game yelling to the refs (and cameras) "I'm the HEAD coach". Les' pre-game press conference "have a great day".
Michigan fans - have a great day with the HEAD coach, you'll deserve him.
Miss Lloyd already, don't ya?

You ever think Herbstreit just bombed both LSU and Michigan for his own alma mater's gain? Since Miles is known for being a cheerleader rather than a coach, no one believes him.

I'm an OSU fan and never cared much for Herbstreit, maybe it was because he was no Greg Frey! I always thought he was anti-OSU when he covered the games, maybe it's just me. I think some of the LSU fans think he did it on purpose, that it was some Big 10 conspiracy.

There's probably an extra onus on Herbstreit to be critical of OSU because of his obvious ties. But his job is to be critical if not controversial. He seems to know the sport quite well and I doubt he would quote something unsourced.

I never saw him play, but it's obvious tOSU could win w/o a big time QB, as can any decent team.
