Waniewski Newsletter:Old Orchard Crime Update

News From Tom Waniewski, District 5 Toledo City Council

February 20, 2008

Possible Break in Crime Spree

The information is still very preliminary, but I wanted to let you know that on Wednesday, Feb. 20th Toledo Police working undercover in Old Orchard made "several" arrests, according to police. I have been lobbying both the mayor and Toledo Police to aggressively pursue what appeared to be an obvious consistent pattern of break-ins in Old Orchard. Although I've had to keep much of the information close to the vest, police had several "plants" throughout the neighborhood the last couple of weeks. It may have paid off.

Details are still being gathered, but I'm told one "group" was caught in the act and another suspicious group was stopped, and questioned. Additionally, a van has been confiscated and is being investigated for fingerprints.

I'll continue to keep you posted on other avenues I'm pursuing to stop this brazen intrusion into citizens' homes and cars. I hope you understand that I am reluctant to mention too much until all the facts are in.

Budget Update

The city is close to finalizing several cuts in the city budget. Coupled with some revenue "enhancers" (increasing ticket fines, for example), the city is hoping to get a balanced budget to the public in the coming weeks. Neighborhood forums will be held in each distirct. I'll let you know what I can arrange in District 5. In the meantime, if you have any comments or suggestions on the budget, drop me a line.
