Over 400 pocket copies of the Constitution were given on behalf of the Toledo Young Republican Club to Toledo public high schools for Constitution Day.
The Toledo Board of Education distributed the resources to all homeroom government students in the district's fourteen high schools. Toledo Public Schools is the fourth largest public school system in the state of Ohio.
President Jeff Simpson of the Toledo Young Republican Club said, âAlthough we understand that simply reading a document is no insurance against oppression, we think it is beneficial to remind our young neighbors of their rights, in hope they will not relinquish those liberties to their government in exchange for a false sense of security.â
âConstitution Day and Citizenship Day,â as it is officially named, recognizes the ratification of the United States Constitution. Americans typically observe the federal holiday on September 17, the day delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787.
Congress established the holiday in 2004 through an amendment proposed by Senator Robert Byrd to the Omnibus spending bill of that year. The law, enacted in 2005, requires all educational institutions which receive federal funding to provide programming on the history of the American Constitution on that day.
The mission of the Toledo Young Republican Club is to provide leadership within our state, county, city and communities while enhancing fellowship between our members and creating working relationships with those in public policy positions. This is done in order to infuse the ideas of freedom and liberty into the framework of our local governments.
The next YR meeting is on Thursday, September 18 at Wesley's Bar and Grill on Adams Street in downtown Toledo. The meeting begins at 6:00 pm.
