Feb 2007 snowstorm

Feb 15

Feb 15, 2007 Toledo Blade story : Big snowstorm leads to a big dig in Toledo area; nearly 9 inches fell

Northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan dug out yesterday from a Valentine’s Day massacre of a snowstorm, which officially dropped 8.6 inches at Toledo Express Airport and up to a foot in areas south and east of the city.

This much is certain about the winter storm Tuesday into early yesterday: it was this winter’s biggest thus far and the largest snowstorm since Dec. 8-9, 2005, when 9.2 inches fell.

National Weather Service spotters yesterday reported 12 inches of snow in Van Wert, 11.5 in Defiance, 11 in Lima, 10 in Fremont, 9 in Norwalk and Hicksville, Ohio, 7.5 in Sandusky, 7 in Monroe, and 4 inches in Adrian and Litchfield, Mich.

A storm summary issued by the National Weather Service office in Cleveland showed even heavier snowfall totals elsewhere across the state, including 17.5 inches in Galion, Ohio, along a swath from Columbus to Cleveland. Another band of heavier snow stretched westward from Mercer County, Ohio, into east-central Indiana.

Nearly empty downtown Toledo streets leave room for plows and front-loaders to collect huge amounts of snow for removal. ( THE BLADE/HERRAL LONG )

Conditions at Toledo Metcalf at 7:53 a.m. Feb 15, 2007: overcast, -1 F, WSW 5mph, wind chill -11 F.

Birds I heard singing around our West Toledo home this morning while shoveling: Northern Cardinal, White-breasted Nuthatch, House Finch, Dark-eyed Junco, and Tufted Titmouse. Also heard an American Robin chirping.

Estimate storm snowfall amounts in the Toledo area as of 7:00 a.m. Feb 14, 2007: 7-9 inches. Total snow depths 8-12 inches.

Nowcast as of 9:16 am EST on February 14, 2007

Although the snow has tapered to flurries...wind gusts to 25 mph will continue to cause significant blowing and drifting of snow. Motorist need to use extreme caution as the wind can quickly cause near whiteout conditions.

Statement as of 3:46 AM EST on February 14, 2007

... Winter Storm Warning now in effect until noon EST today...
... Blizzard Warning is cancelled...

A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect until noon EST today.

Conditions have improved enough not to warrant a Blizzard Warning
anymore. However... the main problem this morning will be continued
blowing and drifting snow with wind gusts to 35 mph. Visibilities
in the blowing snow may drop to under a mile briefly... some
whiteout conditions may occur. Snowfall today should be mainly
early this morning and will be around an inch. Travel especially
this morning may be difficult if not impossible. Wind chills this
morning will approach 9 below... dress appropriately.

The winds will slowly diminish this afternoon... however... some
blowing and drifting snow will continue so travel may still be
difficult in places.

The winds should be much lighter tonight limiting the blowing and
drifting snow.

Coastal Flood Statement

Gale force northeast winds at 40 to 45 mph are expected to develop
late this afternoon and continue through the night over Lake Erie.
The strong winds will cause water levels on Lake Erie to rise in
the western basin even though the lake is mostly ice covered.

There is the possibility that as the water level rises... ice could
begin to break apart and be pushed on shore producing shoreline
damage. The rising water could also cause some flooding in areas
prone to the effects of high water... including Point Place in
Toledo... Lake Shore drive in Jerusalem Township... Metzger marsh
state wildlife area to Crane Creek State Park in Lucas County.

Some flooding and ice problems are also possible in Ottawa County
at Pebble Beach and Marblehead point along with Catawba Island on
the Eastern Shores.

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor this
situation and if needed... will issue coastal flood watches and or
warnings.

Be sure to stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite
weather source for the latest on this coastal flooding potential.
