This morning, I listened on C-span as Rep. Pelosi (D-California) betrayed Americans and sold out her nation.
House Speaker Pelosi joined partisan Republican nationalists in supporting a bill that will grant immunity to corporations that violated the law by implementing mass wireless surveillance on Americans without a warrant. This is the same woman that said “impeachment is off the table,” so it is not surprising that she would kneel before the President, while acquiescing to his demand for immunity.
The glaringly unconstitutional piece of legislation essentially grants immunity to any corporations that “acted patriotically” in the best interest of our country. What the statute provides for is a means to acknowledge violations of the constitution but removes judiciary authority to determine legality of actions taken by corporations. In other words, the legislature is crippling the courts and dictating on the matter of immunity. It is unbelievable the extent to which Republicans have gone to insist on immunity for corporations that violated the law.
Pelosi’s speech sounded like it was prepared by a Bush speech writer, she glossed over the faults and focused on the need to protect Americans from terrorists. She spewed rhetoric about how we must support the troops and all that jazz, the usual commentary that comes when defending arguments that have no merit. For months, I’ve read the many criticisms of Nancy Pelosi and I have to say that I now agree with the assessment that she is an unprincipled weak leader. She is a terrible embarrassment to California and should be voted out of office.
The bill passed 293-129 and is expected to be passed in the Senate next week. This is a very sad day for libertarians and liberals alike. But hey, at least President Bush is delighted with the results.
