Outlet for local authors - "Author Warren Woodberry has a plan to get local writers on TV. They all have latched onto the hopes that Warren Woodberry, author of "For We Are Strangers," will bring to life his idea for a local TV book-review talk show. With plans for a union between local talent and television under way, Woodberry has begun to present his plan for a one-hour forum for authors, playwrights, poets, journalists and English professors. If you’re a local published author, e-mail Woodberry at nowrunandtellthat@hotmail.com."

Latest Town Hall Meeting for The Arts (and Cultire) - Tuesday April 6th was the latest town hall meeting for the mayor's two-year and still going arts commission. Arthur Greenburg, of AMS in St. Louis, was the facilitator. The only proposal on the table was a .45 mil property tax levy on residents of Toledo to help fund the Symphony, Ballet, Opera (which is now down to three active staff) and COSI (which handles all bookkeeping and marketing out of Columbus)
When no one and I mean NO ONE in the 135+ member audience of artists, community activists, small business owners and citizens raised their hand to indicate support for such a levy, Mr. Greenburg was at an impasse. Apparently he had been told by Susan Reams and her cronies on the Mayor’s Commission to present only the levy and therefore had no other proposals as to how to fund the arts in Toledo. This is verifiable by comments Mr. Greenburg made after the meeting.
Suggestions from the audience were shot down pretty quickly. A tax on hotel and motel rooms won’t work because of the convention center, which no one wanted in the first place and is now taking 2% of all revenue from Toledo area hotels until 2015. A proposal to add a $10.00 late charge on all overdue utilities to support the arts puts the burden of supporting the arts on procrastinators and low income people who sometimes have to choose between the phone and food. Taxes on dining out or on event tickets require statewide approval, etcetera. etcetera, etcetera . . .
What are we paying these people for? Between Mrs. Reams, who gets $24,000 a year for a PART TIME JOB, Mr. Greenburg and Richard “Queer Eye for the Straight City” Florida, we must have spent several tens of thousands of dollars on useless information and unfeasible proposals.
The Mayor needs to clean house with this commission and start from scratch. Perhaps he could become the sleepy-eyed spearhead of a statewide tax proposal – a 1% Bed, Board and Entertainment tax. 1% of money spent on hotels, dining-out and any type of admission for any cultural event – concerts, exhibits, sporting events, etc could be put into a state wide fund for the arts. How about it Jack? Your vision of an elegant city could still come to light, just get out of the box and stop hanging with the same old crowd. - More>>

QUIET STORM - I will be hosting a Theater Discussion Group on Monday,March 15, 2004 at 3:00pm at The Collingwood Arts Center in the Gerber House Parlor. We meet to discuss ideas, opinions and topics for material subjects for future theatrical productions. Our first meeting was March 8, 2003. There was a small turn out, but it was also very positive. Among attendees was a national singer of opera, a business professional and a former Channel 50 news photographer. There weren't a lot of faces, but they were familiar. We discussed venues here in Toledo. We collaborated on approaches to material. And the refreshments were great! The group is open to artists and support from the community. Come out and join us!

Spoken word at the local level - " 'There's a revival in Toledo of the arts, a mini-Renaissance,' said poet Melanie Dusseau, instructor at the University of Toledo. On at least three or four days a week in Toledo and the Bowling Green area, poets can be heard during invitationals or at open mike sets in a variety of venues ranging from coffeehouses, jazz clubs, Greek restaurants, wine shops, university classrooms, and in art museums and galleries. The music, along with movies such as Love Jones and Russell Simmons' Def Poetry on HBO, have helped to foster an atmosphere of spoken word, which some pop culture critics say is hip-hop's next movement." - More>>
